Minors in International Studies

At AUS, students take 15 credits of humanities or social science as part of their general education requirements. Most IS minors require 18 credits of course work. That means students can easily have a minor from our department by concentrating their humanities and social science electives and then adding just one extra course.
Click here to view information on the minors offered by the Department of International Studies. These include:

Note: American Studies and Philosophy are new minors, effective Fall Semester 2006. For more information, please contact the professor listed above.
The minors in IS are very good ways to broaden your knowledge of history, the world, government, the mind and human emotions, or wisdom. Our department stresses critical thinking and problem solving. We often use debates, field trips, international experiences and mock scenarios to teach complicated ideas. In short, beyond the minor's subject, you will improve your ability to handle the complexity of life. We believe this is part of a good education, and we also know it is looked on favorably by serious employers everywhere.
Our minors add distinction and originality to professional studies. A journalist who has worked through American history and culture can understand, with added subtlety, the effects and challenges of the free media. A businesswoman with a grasp of governance is poised to understand the world of regulation and trade at a level many do not attain. An engineer who knows philosophy is a person who cannot only perfect systems; she can understand their place in life. An architect who has thought long and hard about human psychology has insightful resources to draw on for his designs. Finally, anyone can be helped by a sense of international complexity, especially here, in today's world.
