Goals of the Program
- To improve the general English language proficiency of students
- To increase the students’ problem-solving skills and creative use of language
- To provide students with a sample of university life on the campus of AUS
- To familiarize students with language learning software in our computer labs
- To provide students with educational and cultural experiences in Sharjah
Communication Studies
8 hours/week
This class is focused on improving student’s reading, writing and listening comprehension skills. Students are also given the opportunity to express ideas, exchange information, monitor and correct their work and relate what they are learning to their own life.
Computer Lab
4 hours/week
The computer lab provides practice in word processing and using the Internet. Students also have the opportunity to improve their English language skills through the use of Computer-Assisted Language Learning activities and English as a Second Language software programs.
Video Lab
4 hours/week
Video is an excellent teaching tool because it provides real language in a variety of settings and helps students learn new words and develop stronger listening skills. The video lab also provides students with practice, speaking English through discussions and debates.
Reading Lab
4 hours/week
Reading is a major part of a student’s life. The reading lab helps students become stronger and faster readers, as well as creates in them an appreciation for literature.
Field Trips
5 hours/week
On weekly field trips, students have opportunities to use their language skills in a variety of settings in and around the Sharjah-Dubai area. Trips to cultural, artistic and historic sites in the region increases students awareness of the importance of learning English in the Gulf and develops their understanding of the local heritage.
Activities
LEAP includes evening and weekend activities. In addition to “just for fun” activities, LEAP students will participate in special science activities, such as fun physics, biology or chemistry experiments. We have a welcome dinner and a closing dinner and party, and activities such as a sports night, bowling, ice skating, paintball, evening walks and movie nights. Some activities are on campus and others are off-campus. The cost of all activities is included in the fees.
Security
Field trips and activities are chaperoned by instructors. Students may not remain at off-campus field trip or activity locations without a chaperone. Students living on campus may not leave campus without written permission from their parents. Students are required to participate in all field trips. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in all activities to improve their English.
