Prof. Susan Smith
Susan Smith has an MAVA in Film and Anthropology (Visual Anthropology) from the University of Southern California. She is currently teaching Documentary production, Writing for Visual Media and Literacy at the American University of Sharjah, UAE. With 15 years experience as an independent documentary producer Susan Smith has written, edited and videotaped a variety of PBS programs such as WPA: Road to Recovery and Porches of Indian Territory. Funded by a USIA fellowship, Smith traveled to the Middle East to document an archaeology site and the Bedouin culture. Much of her documentary work focuses on Indigenous peoples in Mexico, Central America, and Africa. The Devil Made Me Do It examines human rights issues in Guatemala. Voices of the Maasai Girl-Child explores Maasai traditional believes about educating the girl child. Spring of 2004 Smith videotaped A Maasai-Malpai Exchange: The Future of the Open Range that documents a cross-cultural exchange between American Cowboys and Maasai herders concerned with the future of the open range in Kenya. You can see or read about her work at the Mexican Exhibit at Gilcrease Museum and at the Tulsa Zoo Maasai Village and through various publications such as the University of Tulsa Magazine.
