Frequently Asked Questions

Who goes to the AUS Writing Center

CAS, SBM, SOE and SA&D students are all welcome.

What happens at the Writing Center?

At the writing center, you will have a one-on-one session with an instructor about your writing. During the session, you will work with a consultant to develop strategies to achieve your goals as a writer.

Please note that the writing center cannot proofread or edit your assignments; rather, it will teach you to recognize and correct your own errors. We are here to help you with the writing process in a shared effort that depends on your active participation to succeed.

Will I receive an A on my paper?

The writing center cannot guarantee an A on any paper, but if you visit the center regularly, you will improve your writing skills.

Do I have to make an appointment?

You can just drop by if you like; however if you want to ensure that you can see a consultant, it is strongly recommended that you book in advance. During busy times, it is a good idea to book as far in advance as two weeks.

How should I prepare for my writing center conference?

You should schedule your appointment well in advance of the assignment deadline and allow enough time to revise your assignment after the consultation. An appointment scheduled only an hour before the project is due does not allow you to make the changes necessary to improve the assignment. When you meet with the writing consultant, plan to spend half an hour discussing your work, asking questions, and listening to suggestions. The session time will be used more effectively if you bring the following:

  • the assignment sheet or class notes for the writing assignment;
  • a draft critiqued by your instructor; and
  • questions or concerns you may have about the assignment.

What is my instructor’s role?

If your instructor has specific concerns with your writing, he/she may refer you to the writing center by signing the referral form. You may access the form here.

Your instructor will receive a note about your visit to the AUS Writing Center.
