AUS WRITING CENTER STAFF

Celine George: Celine is a sophomore in Mechanical Engineering, who really enjoys Mathematics. Apart from her interest in volleyball, she loves travelling, and being on boats or airplanes. She has been living in Dubai for about 20 years now and cannot believe how awful the traffic has become. This is her first semester at the Writing Center, and she aims to learn a lot from the experience

Fatima Ahmed: Fatima has a Bachelor's in Mass Communications with an undeclared concentration in Journalism from AUS. She hails from a long line of passionate educators, and hopes to continue the trend through pursuing graduate studies in Communications, with an emphasis in sociolinguistics. Although she has extensive interests ranging from 2D Russian animation to mechanics, she considers her favorite pursuits to be reading, arguing over politics at the dinner table, and playing the flute and violin at 1 AM.

Farhaana Ismail: Farhaana is from Malawi. She is a junior student majoring in mass communication concentrating in Public relations. She hopes to minor in Psychology and English literature. She has a passion for reading and can almost always be seen with a book in her hand. She enjoys swimming, music, meeting new people and above all travelling. She dreams about visiting Italy. This is her first semester in the Writing Center, and she looks forward to a great experience.

Khalisah Stevens: Khalisah is currently enjoying her studies in International Relations. She is half American, half Malaysian, and has allowed her parents to drag her around the world during her formative years: an act that has led to a minor identity crisis. She has known government schools in Kuwait, public schools in Malaysia, summer school in America, and a private school in Sharjah. In times she has to spare, she reads, writes, calls up Chindonesians, bugs her siblings, gets angry about today's politics, searches for upside-down maps on the web, and whiles away hours that should be spent on her studies daydreaming. This is her first year working at the Writing Center, and she finds the occupation pleasant. She looks forward to reading fascinating engineering papers on non-destructive testing done on cement blocks.

Lamiyah Zulfiqar: Lamiyah was born in Mumbai, India, and is majoring in English Language and Literature. She is very liberal-artsy and wants a minor in everything offered at AUS. When she isn't writing, she packs in a lot of reading and often reads three books simultaneously. She enjoys working with students and has learnt a lot about writing from them.

Ljubisa “Louie” Djordjevic: Louie is a junior at AUS and is majoring in Chemical Engineering. He is from Belgrade, Serbia, but has lived in Dubai for the past 12 years. He enjoys swimming, watching movies, listening to turbofolk music, and he considers himself an expert in video games. In spite of his hectic Engineering schedule, he can often be found in the Writing Center, helping students out whenever they need him.

Maryam Habil: Maryam is a Libyan who was born in the USA and has been living in the Gulf for the last 11 years. She is a senior majoring in Computer Science and doing a minor in Software Engineering & Security. In her free time, she enjoys reading and writing about philosophy. Moreover, her fascination with the Japanese culture is urging her to learn Japanese.

Maria Eleftheriou: Maria is director of the AUS Writing Center and a full-time instructor in the Department of Writing Studies. She has a Masters from McGill University in Curriculum and Instruction and is working on a Doctorate of Education at Leicester University. With a background in rhetoric and composition, she consults with students and is available to meet with faculty members who have questions about incorporating writing effectively in their courses. She is also responsible for administering the Center, training the writing center staff, and organizing writing workshops for students.

Nour Merza is freelance writer and poet. Her family's globetrotting tendencies have allowed her writing to be influenced by places as varied as Saudi Arabia, Chicago, Los Angeles, and the United Arab Emirates. In between reading, writing, and friends, she enjoys learning foreign languages. She is currently studying Mass Communication and International Relations at the American University of Sharjah.

Reem is Palestinian but was born and raised in Dubai. She is an advertising major and a huge fan of Celine Dion. She enjoys reading lots of books, especially ones recommended by friends. Her favorite book is “Tuesdays with Morrie,” by Mitch Album. She loves traveling and getting introduced to new cultures. She would love to pursue graduate studies in Media Law.

Sadaf Fasihnia: Sadaf is majoring in Accounting and Finance and is aiming for a masters and PhD after her bachelor degree. She was born in Iran but has spent most of her life in the UAE. She loves all field sports but especially enjoys basketball and long distance races. She finds working at the Writing Center both educational and fun. She has met many new people, delivered various workshops and has learned a lot of new grammar rules and writing styles.

Samihah is currently a sophomore who is majoring in Economics and minoring in Psychology (only, as of now). As a result of tutoring at the AUS Writing Centre for a few semesters, she has learnt a great deal about writing and peer interaction. Moreover, she finds the experience of working as a tutor very rewarding, not to mention fun. Oh, and in her spare time, she likes to read, write for herself, listen to music and generally do anything that makes her feel productive.

Samreen is a senior at AUS majoring in Mass Communication with a concentration in advertising. Although she is originally from Pakistan, Samreen was born and raised in the U.A.E. Her interests include reading, music, pop culture and interacting with people. Now in her sixth semester as a tutor, Samreen considers tutoring more than just a job and has learnt a lot from her experience here.
