Areas of Applications

The subject's areas of the institute are:

  1. Construction materials: UAE and the Gulf region are showing continuous and rapid development particularly in the infrastructures. As such, large amounts of construction materials are being used without similar steps spent on the quality control and rational use of the materials. There is a lack of National or Regional Code of Practice to cover both traditional and newly developed construction materials

  2. Materials information systems: Develop an information system that aims to do the following: Facilitate the selection and specification of locally accessible materials for certain tasks. Provide in depth knowledge on the properties and the potential use of locally accessible materials. Provide coordinates for material suppliers and experts. The system might be built of one or more databases that are accessible through the web.

  3. Materials management, conservation, and quality control. Using Infrared technology to evaluate some hidden problems in building materials such as loss of thermal insulation and damage due to water leakage. Evaluating the thermal resistance characteristics and permeability of materials and compositions of materials.

  4. Assessment of materials structural integrity, durability and failure.

  5. New materials related to technologies transfer and assessment. Intelligent materials and Smart structures: self-diagnosis and self-sealing structures, structural control systems, superior strength materials, improved response in natural disaster and fire.

  6. Environmental Geotechnology studies: Soil stabilization, contaminant transport in groundwater, land reclamation, selection of materials borrow sites for construction materials, geotextiles technology in earth construction, technology of solid waste disposal, assessment of geologic risk, and environmental compatibility of materials.

  7. Standard code of practice for the use of materials in the harsh environment of the gulf region.

  8. Non-destructive testing. This includes designing systems and sub-systems to inspect the integrity and composition of structures and materials.

  9. Recycling of materials: use of shredded tires and its ash in stabilization of road construction materials.

  10. Materials for Repair and conservation of heritage buildings and castles.
