Background

Materials systems is a world-class subject and is well recognized locally, regionally and internationally. In a recent millennium lecture - which has been just published by a prominent scientist and delivered in different renowned cities - the thrust of the lecture was to emphasize a better understanding of materials through the new millennium. Copy of the lecture is included. There is evidence worldwide on the lack of understanding of new materials and the need to recognize the characteristics and properties of the materials in order to build more sustainable
infrastructure in the new millennium. This will provides strength, durability and reduces demand on resources through recycling.

There are also many pressing demands in the UAE and the Region to address many problems related to materials and environment and the need to adopt local code of practice governing the use of materials within the arid environment of the region.

To add to the above problems, there is no such center in UAE or the region to take these responsibilities and shoulder it. On the other hand, there are strong indications that many governmental agencies and industries are willing to participate in our center in order to solve many problems and challenges they are facing and to foster new development.

The Institute of Materials Systems will serve as an Independent Institute of Excellence in the Region and will be opened for membership among other faculties in AUS. Membership will be extended to other organizations and societies. It will have a leader role in the region. Close cooperation with other universities, the new Arab Institute of Science and Technology in Sharjah and Society of Engineers in UAE will be strongly established.

The Institute is run by members with sound experience in topics related to materials systems. The activation of this center will yield national and international integration with other centers of excellence which will enhance scientific exchange of knowledge in this pioneer area and this will reflect directly to improve academic programs of the University.

The experience of the members of the Institute on Materials Systems are shown through their publications and activities which are detailed in their CVs.
