Department Head’s Message
Welcome to the Department of Mechanical Engineering homepage. Accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of ABET, the mechanical engineering program at AUS is one of the most dynamic programs in the region and is ever-evolving to meet the market requirements and the modern development in mechanical engineering. Our department is the largest mechanical departments in the UAE and one of the largest in the region.
The strength of department is derived from its excellent faculty, the comprehensive facilities and the success of our graduates in the market. Our faculty and student body represent a wide range of nationalities from across the globe. Many of our faculty are highly recognized in their fields and have earned numerous honors and awards from different engineering societies. Our students are provided a solid engineering education, with a focus on creativity and innovation, and a strong ethical responsibility. The mechanical engineering program prepares graduates with strong leadership qualities. These leadership qualities and our program’s high technical standards generate strong interest from industries and employers across the region. A number of our graduates are perusing their graduate studies worldwide.
Our department has an active American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) student chapter, as well as membership in the Society of Automotive Engineering (SAE) and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).
The department has three major areas of mechanical engineering: thermofluids and energy systems, product design and manufacturing, and dynamics and mechatronics. The department offers advanced technical courses in all of these areas to insure that our graduates get the breadth as well as the depth of education to perform best in the workplace. The research areas of our faculty, as outlined in this website, cover broad and contemporary areas such as:
- energy systems
- complex fluid flows: steady and unsteady, external and internal
- modern real-time control systems
- modeling and simulation of physical systems
- composite materials: thermosets, thermoplastics, metal-metal composites and other advanced engineering materials
- navigation systems and GPS/INS integration
- unmanned vehicles
- manufacturing and manufacturing process monitoring and control
- heat transfer
- computational fluid dynamics
- vibration monitoring and control
In addition to their studies, our students are engaged in many activities to develop their innovation, leadership and communication skills. Examples include their participation in several international competitions such as the FSAE auto-cross competition, the Design, Build and Fly competition, the SAE Supermileage Challenge and the Solar Car. All these activities create engineers with qualities employers seek. Joining the Department of Mechanical Engineering at AUS will prepare students to complete with students from around the world.
Our facilities, laboratory equipment, excellent faculty and administration are here for one purpose—to help students succeed in realizing their education goals. We make sure that this program will bring about a positive change in our students’ futures.
I invite you to explore our website. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us and we will be more than happy to respond to your queries.
