Judicial Affairs

Judicial Affairs is responsible for educating students on their rights and responsibilities, and the University Rules they have to follow.

Judicial Affairs strives to resolve allegations of misconduct under the student Code of Conduct in a manner consistent with its core value of fairness, honesty and integrity. All the information shared with Judicial Affairs is strictly confidential.

Judicial Affairs - FAQ’s

1. What is a Code of Conduct?
Code of Conduct is a set of university rules and regulations aligned in the Student Handbook. Violation of these rules is treated as misconduct.

2. What is a letter of reprimand?
A letter of reprimand is a written warning issued for violating the Code of Conduct.

3. When do you receive a first warning letter?
You receive a first warning letter after receiving a reprimand letter for repeatedly violating the Code of Conduct.

4. What is a Conduct Council Hearing Board?
A group of members in authoritative positions from AUS administration who help with rational scrutiny of a particular case and recommend appropriate sanctions in an open discussion form.

5. What is a Conduct Council Hearing?
In a condition when it is necessary that an incident requires the intervention of the Conduct Council Hearing Board to decide on the sanctions for gross violation of the Code of Conduct a hearing is organized to meet the complainant and the respondent.

6. What is Conduct Probation?
Conduct probation is a stipulated term when the student’s behavior is watched for involving in a particular violation.

7. What is Social Probation?
Social Probation is 5 to 10 hours of honorary work with any department of AUS as directed by the concerned authorities.

8. Who is the responsible for implementing the Code of Conduct?
The Office of Student Affairs is responsible for implementing the Code of Conduct.

9. If I am found responsible for violating the code of conduct what will be the consequences?
If the violation is for the first time you will be warned verbally, if it repeats you will receive a reprimand letter, if it continues you will receive a first warning letter and if it still continues you will be issued a second warning letter or dismissed depending on how grave your involvement is.

10. How could I plead?
You may fill in a petition at the Judicial Affairs Office who will appeal with the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs to decide on its viability.

11. What about the witnesses?
The witnesses are questioned and their opinion is considered important in resolving the matter.

12. When can I appeal a decision?
Within 10 working days of receiving the sanctions in writing.

13. What are judicial records?
When an incident is reported the judicial affairs opens a file for the students involved and maintains a record.

14. How many years are these records maintained with Judicial Affairs?
These records are maintained for five years.

15. What should I do if I am unable to attend a hearing?
You must contact the Judicial Affairs Officer immediately.

16. Do I have to see the students I am complaining about?
No. Not necessary.

17. Is there a limit how long I have to make a referral?
Within 10 days from the actual date of the incident.

18. There is a block on my room assignment for a judicial referral, what does that mean?
It means you must pass by the Judicial Affairs Office to know the reason and request for removal of the hold.

19. How can this block be revoked?
The Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs is responsible for removal of the hold.

20. On what disciplinary grounds can I be dismissed?
If you are responsible for physically injuring a student, violating the IT policy, distributing porno material, alcohol/drugs consumption and storage in the residential halls or leaking sensitive material harming the reputation of the university you may be dismissed.

21. Will my parents find out?
The university tries its best to negotiate with the student and correct his/her behavior but if it is a serious issue where the parents need to be notified the university will inform. Your involvement in violating the university’s drug or alcohol policies or in an act of serious misbehavior risking the health or safety of nother student or a repeated violation of the Code of Conduct will force us to inform your parent.

22. What is parental notification?
In case of serious violation a letter is addressed to the parents informing their wards involvement is parental notification.
