Fire Drills
Below are guidelines for conducting fire drills, as well as a list of building evacuation procedures.
Preparation
Meet with the building's occupants
- Review evacuation procedures, including those for persons with disabilities
- Agree to responsibilities/roles for the drill
- Pick a date and time
Schedule technical assistance
- Call the Operations Department (ext. 2100) to arrange for an electrician to activate the alarm
- Call the Safety Enforcement Manager (ext. 2068) at least one week prior to schedule a date and time for a Civil Defense Officer to witness your drill
Publicize the upcoming drill to the building's occupants
- Post a notice that includes the purpose of the drill, reviews the procedures and denotes legal obligations
- Provide alternative options for evacuation for persons with disabilities
- Send an e-mail announcement (optional)
The Day Before
Prepare any special props for the drill (optional)
- "Cardboard flames" for the location of the fire(s)
- "Cardboard smoke" for inaccessible corridors and/or stairwells
Confirm responsibilities/roles with players
- College, school and department heads
- Safety Enforcement Division
- Operations Department
The Day of the Drill
- Technician activates the alarm
- Advise people to stay clear of building entrances/exits
- Fire/emergency coordinator releases the building of occupancy
Drill Evaluation
- Meet with college, school and department heads
- Update and revise procedures as necessary
Building Evacuation Procedures
You must evacuate the building when you hear an alarm or call for building evacuation. When you evacuate the building, please remember the following:
- Take personal belongings with you (e.g., purse, wallet, car keys, prescription medication, eyeglasses) if evacuation condition permits.
- Leave through the nearest safe exit.
- Walk briskly; do not run.
- Close the doors behind you.
- Do not use elevators to evacuate.
- Keep all roadways and entrances clear for emergency vehicles.
- Inform the assembly area supervisor of any missing persons and their last known location.
- Follow the instructions of the assembly area supervisor, and security and emergency response personnel. You may be asked to move if your designated assembly area becomes unsafe.
- Do not re-enter the building for any reason until given clearance to do so by the assembly area supervisor.
