Road Safety
Most of us feel that we are good drivers, but many of us will be involved in an accident, whether it is our fault or not. However, by following safe driving procedures we can reduce the chances of being involved in an accident.
A few important points to note:
- Drive within speed limits. Don’t be in a rush!
- Keep a safe distance from other vehicles.
- Don’t make sudden lane changes. When changing lanes check your blind spots.
- When stopping, check mirrors and begin braking early to stop smoothly.
- Don’t use devices such as mobile phones or adjust the radio while driving.
- And, of course, wear your seat belt.
Blind Spots
The blind spot is the area that is not visible in your side mirrors. Cars in this area are not visible if you only look in the mirrors. Traffic departments advise drivers to quickly turn the head to check this area before changing lanes.
Distractions
Avoid the following while driving:
- Mobile phones. Even using a hands-free phone is not totally safe as your attention is diverted form the road.
- Reading newspapers or maps
- Detailed discussions with passengers (especially arguments)
- Tending to children
- Eating or drinking
Safe Braking Distance
Be aware that at higher speeds, the braking distance for the car increases. Do not drive too closely to or tailgate another car.
Remember, you must be concerned about the safety of others as well as yourself!
