Security Division

Our commitment to a safe and secure community can be seen in several ways. Our department provides officers with some of the best, comprehensive training. We work hand-in-hand with local police, fire and traffic departments as a team dedicated to providing a secure campus and community. And we continue to seek new and better ways to serve the AUS campus.

Security personnel are responsible for managing various tasks, such as investigations, violations, traffic, parking, issuing stickers and IDs.

We always welcome the opportunity to answer questions or to simply get to know you better. We operate 24-hours-a-day, every day of the year.


Mission:

The mission of the AUS Security Division is to maintain a welcoming, safe and secure environment for students, faculty and staff by applying the rules of AUS and Sharjah and the UAE government. Our competent and professionally trained security staff provides a variety of public services to AUS community members, with cooperation from the University City police and other law enforcement departments in Sharjah.

Responsibilities

Security for the entire AUS campus is the responsibility of the Security Division. The functions of this division include the following:

  1. Ensuring security of the university community and its properties by providing protection 24-hours-a-day. 
  2. Receiving and responding to complaints and emergency calls. These can be done either by calling AUS personnel via the AUS security number (+97165152222), email address (aus_security@aus.edu) or visiting the security offices (rooms MM30 and MM 33 on the mezzanine floor of the Main Building).
  3. Issuing AUS stickers and hang tags for faculty, staff and students’ cars in order to control road security on campus and to ensure that all cars are parked in proper parking areas at the academic buildings and residential areas. AUS car stickers must be returned to the Security Department if the car is sold.
  4. Issuing AUS ID cards.
  5. Issuing permissions for cars.
  6. Providing vehicles assistance.
  7. Enforcing traffic regulations  that  concern: 
    • Parking allotted to faculty, staff, students, and visitors.
    • Bicycles policy,
    • Campus paid parking system

A. Complaints

AUS security officers are ready to receive any kind of complaint. Complaints can be filed either in person by visiting office MM30, mezzanine floor, Main Building, or by completing the appropriate form and submitting it to AUS Security by e-mailing it to aus_security@aus.edu.

B. AUS ID Cards

1. Students

I. New ID

All registered students are eligible for an AUS ID card. New students should apply for the ID card before the deadline each semester otherwise a fine of AED 50 will be imposed.

To obtain an ID, students must:

  • Settle all financial requirements with the cashier
  • Submit one passport-size photo to the security division
  • Submit their blood group to the University Health Clinic
  • Register for their courses

II. Lost ID

If a student loses his or her ID, he or she should complete the Lost ID Clearance Form from the Security Office and must pay an AED 100 fine to the cashier. Replacement cards will not be issued until this fine is paid. This charge is not required if the ID card is stolen [police report is required in this case].

III. Renewing an ID


Registered students who did not renew their IDs before the deadline of renewal will be fined AED 50.00. This will be deducted automatically from their accounts.

2. Faculty/Staff

To obtain an ID, faculty and staff members must submit one passport-size photo and their ID number to the Security Division. They must also submit their blood group to University Health Clinic.

3. Dependents

All faculty and staff dependents above 16 years of age are eligible for an ID card. To obtain an ID, one must submit a passport-size photo and his/her ID number to Security Division. He/she must also submit his/her blood group to University Health Clinic.

4. Alumni

Alumni are eligible for alumni ID cards, which allow them access to campus and borrowing privileges at the AUS Library. Student ID and car sticker should be returned before an alumni card been issued.

C. Temporary Permits

Temporary permits are issued for AUS visitors, contractors and their cars. Also, faculty, staff and students should obtain a temporary permit in case they are using a rented car or a car on temporary basis.

The request for temporary permit should be submitted to the Security Division along with the following:

  1. Valid driving license and personal photo of the driver.
  2. Valid car registration.
  3.  Rental contract for rented cars.
  4. A letter from parents for non-close relative drivers approved by the VCSA (if applicable).
  5. A passport copy, including visa page for contractors.

Note: After the permit has expired, kindly return it to the Security Division to be cancelled.

I. Access Control

a) For faculty/staff and students working in schools:

Access is granted by the school ACS-assigned operator. According to the instructions of the dean of the designated school, the schools ACS operators are to be identified by deans and director’s secretary as shown:

  1. CAS & IEP
  2. SBM
  3. COE
  4. SA&D
  5. RH

    b) For faculty/staff working in non-academic departments:

  • Access is granted according to a request approved by the Dean/Director/Manager of the department to the ACS administrator (Main Building.). aus_security@aus.edu
  • Any access control hardware and/or software installation or relocation request should get the approval of the Security Division.

D. Motor vehicle assistance

For a small fee, security personnel can offer assistance in the following situations:

  1. Re-charging car battery.
  2. Helping to open locked vehicles; contacting the appropriate outlets in case of missing car keys.
  3. Arranging for towing services.

E. Security Policies

1. Parking

AUS Parking Services is a section of the Security Division at the Public Relations Department. This section is responsible for the development and execution of the approved parking policy, administration of the parking system, collection of approved fees and the enforcement of parking regulations, providing the highest quality customer-focused services which promote safe, efficient, reliable and convenient parking.
All persons parking in AUS paid or reserved parking must purchase a parking permit. On-campus students are not eligible to park on campus except during periods when parking restrictions are suspended. Visitors may use only the visitors' section at the "P 16" lot located at the side of the mosque……….. (designated in yellow on the campus map). These lots are not for use by AUS faculty, staff, dependents and students.

A. Car Registration

  1. Any Member of the AUS community who wishes to own and drive a car inside the campus must have the car registered with AUS Security.
  2. For registration of your vehicle, you are requested to bring your car registration, along with a valid AUS ID card.
  3. You are requested to fill the designated form for fees due. (Faculty and staff have the choice of either paying cash at the cashier’s or signing the form for payroll deduction. Students can either pay at the cashier or through the sale point system.}
  4. Parking registration is handled by the AUS Parking Services, Security Division at the Public Relations Department, located in Room MM33, Security Office, on mezzanine floor of the Main Building.
  5. Parking stickers MUST be displayed on vehicles as specified. (General rules /Paid parking system)

B. Parking Limitations/Prohibitions

  1. Official posted signs shall govern the use of all areas.
  2. Failure to park so that the entire vehicle lies between the lines which designate the parking space.
  3. Parking at any time on campus roads, lawns, loading docks, walkways, delivery entrances, disabled areas or any other unauthorized parking area.
  4. Securing or using parking privileges through misrepresentation or fraud.
  5. Failure to display AUS vehicle identification stickers/hang tag.
  6. Unauthorized or improper use of visitor parking.
  7. Vehicle storage (parking over 48 hours) is prohibited without permission of the AUS Parking Services.

C. Enforcement

Campus parking and traffic regulations and UAE, Sharjah vehicle laws are enforced by AUS Parking Services officers.

D. University Holidays and Weekends

  1. Parking lot restrictions are suspended on university holidays and weekends except in designated disabled areas, posted reserved.
  2. Parking restrictions remain in effect for all campus roads, fire lanes, delivery entrances, walkways, lawns and other unauthorized parking areas.

E. Wheel Locking

Vehicles are subject to wheel locking without notice and fines must be paid before vehicle is released to owner as following:

  1. Any vehicle obstructing a roadway, loading ramp or that in any other way obstructs traffic.
  2. Any vehicle parked without authorization in a space reserved for a designated disabled.
  3. A vehicle parked in other than a clearly marked parking space.
  4. Any individual who disregards a lawful order from a member of the Security Department may have his/her vehicle locked.

F. Appeals Process

Individuals who feel that a notice of violation has been improperly issued may submit, within seven days of receipt of a parking citation, a written appeal to the AUS Security section Click here to download Appeals Form.
No appeal will be accepted after seven days from the date of violation.

G. Limitation Of Liability

Persons with parking privileges are entitled to the use of appropriate parking spaces. Acceptance of parking privileges (car sticker or hang-tag) constitutes an agreement between the holder and the university and that the university shall not be responsible for the loss or damage to the vehicle, its accessories or contents, resulting from theft, fire, collision or any other cause.

2. Car Stickers


All faculty, staff and students must register their vehicles and must display a valid AUS parking sticker on the windshield.  

Registration entitles a person to drive on campus and to park in designated parking spaces in parking lots only. It does not guarantee the availability or location of a parking space.

Vehicles Registration

  1. Vehicles Registration is located at the AUS Parking Services office, MM-33 in the Main Building, extension 2074.
  2. Each applicant must show a valid vehicle registration and AUS valid ID card.
  3. Students are only required to pay a fee if they register their vehicles after the designated registration period has elapsed.
  4. Those students who registered and did not renew their car sticker before the deadline of renewal will be fined (AED 50.00) which will be deducted automatically from their accounts.
  5. Hangtags cost AED 100 per year.
  6. AED 100 will be charged for lost hangtags and AED 50 for lost car stickers.
  7. Damaged car sticker and hangtags are replaced free of charge only if the owner returns the old one.

Issuing Stickers

  1. Permanent stickers are issued to AUS students, faculty and staff.
  2. Temporary permits are issued for visitors, faculty or staff on campus part-time or short-term, and contractor’s cars.
  3. Hangtags are available for faculty, staff and students who own more than one car.

3. Campus Paid Parking System

 

Parking areas on the central campus (not including dormitory parking) will be divided into four categories:

  • Paid Reserved
  • Paid
  • Free
  • Visitors

PAID RESERVED:

Parking spaces in this category can be reserved for a fee of AED 360 per academic year. These spaces are available only for eligible faculty and staff members and will be numbered.

Parking lots designated under this category are: P12, P13, P14, P15 and part of P11.

PAID:

Paid parking lots will be available to faculty, staff and students (who live off campus) for a fee of AED 300 per academic year. The availability of parking spaces will not be guaranteed in this category or location of a parking space. Spaces will be accessible on a “first come first served” basis.

Parking lots designated under this category are: P1, P2, P3, P4, P7, P8, P9, P10 and P11.

FREE:

Parking spaces in this category will be available to off-campus (commuting) students, staff members and adjunct faculty and those who live off campus and who choose not to pay a parking fee.

Parking lots designated under this category are P5 and P6

VISITORS:

Parking spaces in this category will be available for visitors who do not belong to the AUS community (i.e. who are not AUS faculty, staff or students).

This rule will be applicable to all parking spaces in this category except those at the AUS clinic, which will be available to all visitors to the clinic. These parking spaces will be free of charge.

The main parking lot designated for visitors under this category is: P16 (mosque parking).

General Rules

  • Students residing in dorms are required to park their cars only in the spaces assigned to them within the dorm parking areas. Fines will be imposed if vehicles are parked in unauthorized areas.
  • Faculty and staff living on campus can either park their cars free of charge in the parking spaces next to their homes or pay to park in either the Paid or Paid Reserved parking zones on campus.
  • Student stickers and hangtags will have three different designs to distinguish between the paid/non-paid and on-campus students hangtags/sticker’s holders.
  • Faculty and staff will be eligible for one paid sticker only. However, free extra stickers will be issued according to individual requirements upon request.
  • In case the car carrying a paid sticker is not being used by its owner (due to an accident or the vehicle having gone for service etc), a temporary permit will be issued allowing the person to park in the Paid or Paid Reserved parking.
  • As per service needs and requirements, university services vehicles are allowed to park anywhere on campus.(Duty time only)
  • The space owners do not have the right to lend or lease their space under any circumstance.
  • The reserved spaces are to be used for short term only.
  • Parking spaces can be changed only after informing the security department.
  • While on holiday or away from campus for a considerable duration of time, faculty and staff living on campus can only park their vehicles in the spaces provided at their residences.
  • Any car not displaying a car sticker will be fined AED 50. 
  • Hangtag and car stickers will be renewed annually after paying the renewal amount .

4. Campus Bicycle Policy

The purpose of this policy is to clearly define the rules and restrictions pertaining to the possession and use of a bicycle on campus. All bicycles must be registered with the Campus Security Office. Failure to do so will incur a fine of AED 50. Bicycles are to be parked in the outside bike racks.

Bicycles may not be kept in hallways, under stairways, residence halls or other places. AUS security will remove bicycles left in unauthorized places, and the owner must pay a fee of AED 50 to reclaim the bicycle.

I. Definition

  • A bicycle is any two or three-wheeled, human-powered vehicle.
  • Skateboards, roller-skates and rollers blades do not fall under this category and are hence not subject to this policy.

II. Bicycle Registration

  • Any member of the AUS community that wishes to own and ride a bicycle on campus must have the bicycle registered with AUS Security.
  • The bicycle-owner must report to AUS Security in order to have the bicycle registered. Bicycle owners below the age of 15 must either be accompanied by or have a letter from their guardian.
  • A one-time registration fee of AED 20 is charged per bicycle.
  • Upon registration, the bicycle will have a plate number, a bar-code sticker stuck on the front side of the steering handle. It is the responsibility of the bicycle owner to regularly check that the sticker is present, has not come off and is clearly legible. If the registration sticker has fallen off, is worn off or has become illegible, the bicycle owner must report immediately to AUS Security to get another sticker free of charge.
  • Mopeds, scooters, quad-bikes and other motor-powered vehicles are strictly forbidden on campus.

Register your bike by contacting the AUS Security Office, MM 33 Mezzanine floor, AUS Main Building and submit the following information:

Name, ID number, email address, contact numbers, bicycle description and information
(Brand-model, serial number, frame, type: Men’s/women’s, color)

III. Rules and Regulations

A. Riding Regulations

  • Bicycles may only be ridden upon roadways and sidewalks. However, every person riding a bicycle shall yield the right of way to pedestrians at all times.
  • Bicyclists must be very cautious when riding on campus. Accidental collisions may seriously injure pedestrians or other bicyclists. A bicyclist who strikes anyone is liable for all medical expenses of that victim and any damage done to the victim’s property.
  • Obstacle riding or other acts or maneuvers which may endanger the bicycle operator or others or damage property is prohibited.
  • Bicycle racing is strictly prohibited.
  • Bicycles are not to be ridden at high, sprinting speeds at any time. Brisk riding is allowable provided Article 2 of this section is never violated at any time.
  • Bicycles shall not be ridden upon any ramp, stairway, wall, bench, fountain, or other structure or facility or on or over shrubbery, grass or flower beds. Bicycles shall not be ridden within any building or parking structure except as part of a university-approved competition or function.
  • No person riding a bicycle shall attach the same in any manner to any moving vehicle.
  • No bicycle shall be used to carry more persons at one time than the number for which it is designed and equipped, except that an adult rider may carry a child securely attached to his/her person in a backpack or sling or in a child carrier securely attached to the bicycle.
  • No person riding a bicycle shall carry any package, bundle, or other article which may prevent the operator from keeping at least one hand on the handle bars.
  • Every bicycle shall be equipped with brakes, reflectors and other safety devices.

B. Parking Regulations

  • Bicycles may only be parked in the parking rails provided near each campus building.
  • Bicycles must never be parked directly in front of any entrance or driveway.
  • Bicycles must never be parked inside any building.
  • Bicycles must never be secured to any utility line, lamp post, gate, railing, divider, post or vehicle.
  • Bicycles not to be ridden on university property between the hours of 00:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. except as necessary for the transportation of university employees and students who have legitimate reasons for being on university property during these hours.

IV. Enforcement

  • AUS Security staff and university-contracted security personnel are authorized to monitor and inspect bicycles and cyclists on campus, and thus have the right to enforce penalties in violation of the rules in this policy.
  • Bicycles that are found to be without the registration sticker will be impounded immediately and the owners will be fined AED 50 for not having said sticker.
  • Bicyclists found violating any riding regulations will be fined AED 50 for each violation. The fine shall be levied on the owner of the bicycle regardless if he/she was driving the bicycle.
  • Bicyclists that cause, as a result of riding the bicycles, any injuries to any individuals or damages to any property, whether of an individual or of the university, will have their bicycles impounded and be suspended from riding bicycles on campus indefinitely depending on the severity of the offense, as per the discretion of AUS Security.
  • Bicycles found to be violating any parking regulations will be fined AED 50 for each violation and the bicycles would be impounded. The fine shall be levied on the owner of the bicycle regardless if he/she was riding the bicycle.
  • Impounded bicycles that have registration stickers will be kept under the custody of AUS Security for 30 calendar days, after which the bicycle will be auctioned off by AUS Logistics Division. Notifications will be duly sent to the owners of the bicycles.
  • Impounded bicycles that do not have registration stickers or a plate number will be kept under the custody of AUS Security for 30 calendar days, after which the bicycle will be auctioned off by AUS Logistics Division. No effort will be made to track down and notify the owners of the bicycles. Owners may issue an official claim on the impounded bicycles to AUS Security provided they present any proof of purchase.
  • Bicycles that are handed over to AUS Logistics Division for the purpose of auctioning off are considered unredeemable. The earnings from the auction would be donated to AUS Community Services Division as charity.
  • A bicycle operator who strikes a pedestrian or other bicyclist and does not stop to inquire whether any harm or damage has been done, has committed the crime of “hit and run”, and thus would be subject to punishment as per UAE laws.
  • All fines and punishments will be levied on the owner of the bicycle that was being ridden when a violation or offense is committed. The bicyclist will also be charged accordingly by AUS Security, depending on the nature of the violation or offense. The charge may range from an official warning, a fine or an indefinite suspension of on-campus bicycle driving privileges.
