About

CAS  >  Departments  >  English  >  About

The Department of English offers courses in literatures, linguistics, and academic and professional writing that provide students with insight into the relationship between language, thought and culture in a global context. Courses in the Department of English develop students’ understanding of the ways in which literature and linguistics: reflect and interrogate cultural contexts, values and norms; shape and communicate personal, social and cultural identities; and expose students to multiple national, geographic, literary, linguistic and historical contexts.

Our department offers courses that expand students' understanding of various world cultures and their global interactions through English translations of world literature. Our courses also prepare students for further studies in the arts and humanities and give them a solid foundation in the English language used for worldwide interaction in their profession. We also contribute to the university's general education requirements by offering a range of undergraduate courses. The DoE prepares students for the rigors of academic writing in the university and beyond. We sharpen the reading and writing skills students need both for further study and for their future careers. We attempt to lay the foundation for a lifetime of learning and personal inquiry.

Our Bachelor of Arts degree in English with concentrations in language or literature is popular among students. We also offer minors in English language and English literature, as well as a Master of Arts in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) program at the graduate level.

The study of literature and language develops advanced, and transferrable, skills in critical thinking and writing and prepares students for careers in a wide variety of public sector, corporate, governmental, non-governmental and educational organizations. Graduates of the program pursue careers in such diverse fields as publishing, teaching, media, marketing, writing, and foreign service. They also pursue graduate study in literature, linguistics, law, and even medicine.

With a diverse and highly-qualified faculty and a comprehensive curriculum, we make sure that our students are equipped with the best theoretical and practical knowledge during the course of their degree.

We strive hard to ensure that we do not comprise on our goals, which are:

  • To develop students’ knowledge of the structure and uses of English
  • To provide students with insight into the relationship between language, thought, and culture through the study of English literatures and linguistics
  • To enable students to understand and implement theoretical approaches to English literatures and linguistics
  • To provide students with transferable skills in research, writing and critical thinking
  • To lay the foundations for the valuable written communication skills applicable to all aspects of their future lives whether in local, professional or international communities.

If you are looking for a major that will expand your understanding of the English language and its literature while preparing you to think and write critically and to communicate effectively in a wide variety of academic and professional arenas, then the Bachelor of Arts in Language and Literature might be just what you are looking for.
