The Department of English offers courses in literatures, linguistics, and academic and professional writing that provide students with insight into the relationship between language, thought and culture in a global context. Courses in the Department of English develop students’ understanding of the ways in which literature and linguistics: reflect and interrogate cultural contexts, values and norms; shape and communicate personal, social and cultural identities; and expose students to multiple national, geographic, literary, linguistic and historical contexts.
Our department offers courses that expand students' understanding of various world cultures and their global interactions through English translations of world literature. Our courses also prepare students for further studies in the arts and humanities and give them a solid foundation in the English language used for worldwide interaction in their profession. We also contribute to the university's general education requirements by offering a range of undergraduate courses. The DoE prepares students for the rigors of academic writing in the university and beyond. We sharpen the reading and writing skills students need both for further study and for their future careers.
