Faculty position in Psychology

The American University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates invites applications for a full-time faculty position in psychology.  We seek candidates who are able to teach courses in clinical or health psychology, in addition to research methods and other topics. 

Successful candidates will have a Ph.D. or Psy.D. in the relevant field, a strong commitment to the teaching of psychology, a strong background in research or practice, and an interest in contributing actively to the interdisciplinary atmosphere of the Department of International Studies.

AUS is currently seeking initial accreditation for a new undergraduate program in psychology. Thus, candidates should indicate any interests, qualifications, or experiences related to program development.  The course load 3 or 4 courses per semester depending on the research expectation.  Benefits include on-campus housing for faculty and dependents.

Head of the Department of Writing Studies

The Department of Writing Studies (DWS) in the College of Arts and Sciences at the American University of Sharjah (AUS) invites experienced candidates to apply for the position of Head of Department (HoD). We encourage applications from candidates with extensive administration, teaching, and service experience. We are seeking candidates who have an excellent record of teaching students from diverse background (including L2 students) and relevant research and publications in the field of rhetoric and composition.

Required Qualifications

  • A PhD in Composition and Rhetoric, or related fields such as English, Applied Linguistics or Curriculum and Instruction.
  • Leadership and administrative experience, preferably in leading  a writing department or program
  • Experience in curriculum and program development and interest in promoting writing across the curriculum
  • Background in the practice of faculty evaluation and mentoring
  • Teaching composition and rhetoric in North American liberal arts education system for a minimum of six years
  • Experience in international teaching  and awareness of the needs of L2 students
  • Experience in teaching various kinds and levels of composition using a variety of pedagogies (from time-honored rhetorical approaches to the latest developments as practiced in North American universities)

The Department of Writing Studies offers writing courses to more than 1200 students each semester. The department currently has 24 full time faculty members actively engaged in research in diverse areas related to academic writing and rhetoric. Assistant/Associate Professor in Linguistics / Applied Linguistics

Faculty position in Political Science

Faculty Position in History

The Department of International Studies at the American University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates seeks a full-time faculty member specializing in either East Asian or South Asian history.  Although these are our primary areas of interest other specialties may also be considered.  Candidates must be able to teach a range of courses in their field as well as survey courses in world history, ability to teach courses on globalization, imperialism or other areas of international studies a plus.

Position in Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language (TAFL)

The Department of Arabic and Translation Studies at the American University of Sharjah (AUS) invites applications for a faculty position in Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language (TAFL) at the rank of Assistant or Associate professor to begin in the fall of 2017, pending budgetary approval.  A Ph.D. in Arabic studies is required, with a specialization in a genre, era, or regional focus of Arabic literature, preferably the classical grammatical tradition or related genre. Experience in teaching in or coordinating Arabic as a foreign language programs is strongly preferred. The willingness and ability to teach entry-level Arabic heritage classes is essential. Successful applicants will have native or near-native proficiency in Arabic and English. The language of instruction at AUS is English, however, candidates able to teach courses in both Arabic and English are preferred. Strong scholarly record/potential and relevant teaching experience are expected.  

Strong applicants with Master degrees (M.A.) in TAFL and five or more years' experience in teaching Arabic will be considered at the instructor rank.

Faculty Position in Biology

The American University of Sharjah (www.aus.edu) seeks a PhD faculty member in Biology or Biology-related field to fill a full-time faculty position in the Department of Biology, Chemistry and Environmental Sciences (BCE). The successful candidate will be required to instruct general biology courses in addition to advanced courses related to their area of expertise.

The successful candidate will have:

  • A PhD in Biology or Biology-related discipline
  • An established, or potential to establish, record of excellence in teaching, research and service

The preferred candidate will have

  • Experience in North American style of higher education
  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas: Conservation Biology, Ecosystems Management, Botany or Environmental Microbiology

BCE offers BS degrees in Biology, Chemistry and Environmental Sciences, and minors in Biology, Environmental Sciences and Environmental Policy. BCE currently has 17 full-time faculty members actively engaged in research within the three disciplines.

Faculty Positions in Mathematics and Statistics

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the American University of Sharjah invites applications for faculty positions in mathematics and statistics beginning August 2017. One position is in the area of statistics, and the remaining positions are open to all other areas in mathematics.

Candidates are required to have a Ph.D. in mathematics or statistics. Evidence of strong potential in research, excellence in teaching at all levels of the curriculum and strong communication skills in English are expected. Experience in American-style higher education is an advantage. Applications at all ranks will be considered but preference is given to applications at the rank of assistant or associate professor.

The Department of Mathematics & Statistics at AUS offers a master of science in mathematics, an undergraduate degree in mathematics, a minor in applied and computational mathematics, and a minor in actuarial mathematics. It provides courses in service to almost every academic program campus-wide. The department currently consists of 28 full time faculty members who are actively engaged in original research in different areas of mathematics and statistics. Faculty Position in the Department of Writing Studies

The Department of Writing Studies seeks full-time faculty members to teach composition at the American University of Sharjah. Candidates should have a master's or doctoral degree in English or in a related field. A background in rhetoric and composition is a strong plus.

In addition, candidates should have both a minimum of three years' experience teaching composition in North American-style higher education and overseas teaching experience. Furthermore, candidates should have demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching writing.

Adjunct Faculty Position in the Department of English

The Department of English at the American University of Sharjah (AUS) seeks applicants for an adjunct faculty position to teach Advanced Academic Research Writing, Writing for Engineers, and/or Business Writing.

Candidates holding a completed Ph.D. in English Language or Literature, or a related area, and who have experience teaching courses in academic writing and/or English for specific purposes are encouraged to apply. Faculty Position in Integrated Marketing Communication

The Department of Mass Communication at the American University of Sharjah seeks a full time faculty member in Integrated Marketing Communication beginning Fall 2017. Successful candidates should have a doctoral degree in IMC, Advertising, Public Relations, Mass Communication or related fields from an accredited university, and are expected to have an active research agenda in their area of expertise. Candidates should also have evidence of at least three years of effective teaching in IMC and/or related fields.  Three years of agency or corporate experience preferred.

Assistant Professor (or higher rank) of Choral Music

The American University of Sharjah Performing Arts Program invites applications for a position in Choral Music with a Piano emphasis.

Responsibilities include: Conducting the mixed choral ensemble, teaching beginning applied piano lessons, and one other class per semester for undergraduate students (which may include class piano and/or sight-singing), carry out scholarly and applied research, and engage in service-related activities. Other teaching responsibilities will be assigned based on background and departmental needs, but could include courses in music history.

Required: Established reputation as a performer through performance and/or publication, record of successful teaching at the university level, and a demonstrated commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. An earned doctorate (D.M.A., Ph.D. or equivalent) in Music from an accredited institution is required. Applicants nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered. Applicants must be committed to undergraduate education and demonstrate the potential for excellence in teaching and scholarship with undergraduates. The new faculty member will contribute to the sustainability, growth, and development of the Performing Arts Program's (Music, Theatre, and Dance) artistic goals, and serve on college and/or university-wide committees.

Assistant Professor (or higher rank) Costume/Scenic Designer

The American University of Sharjah Performing Arts Program, housed within the College of Arts and Sciences, invites applications for a full-time appointment in Costume Design to begin in the fall of 2017. This faculty member will join a small but growing program, which includes theatre, dance, and music, and has an active production schedule. We seek an artist and educator who will teach specialized courses in costume and makeup design, as well as an introductory course in theatre. Additional responsibilities will include designing and building costumes for 2-3 theatre productions per academic year. Candidates with Scenic Design background as well will receive strong consideration. The successful candidate will be instrumental in contributing to curriculum creation and development for the first academic costume and scenic design courses in the Arabian Peninsula. We are especially interested in candidates who are dedicated to teaching undergraduates in a liberal arts environment, committed to working with ethnically and culturally diverse faculty and students from across the globe, and who will thrive in a small, ambitious collegiate setting. A terminal degree in theatre (MFA Preferred) and professional design experience is a plus. At least 3 years of college or university teaching experience is strongly desired.
