General Education Program Goals and Outcomes

The information presented on this webpage pertains to the revised General Education Program requirements in effect from the Fall 2012 semester onward. Students following catalogs prior to the 2012-2013 academic year must adhere to the general education requirements outlined in the graduation section of their respective catalog.

Goal A. Gain an understanding of the history and culture of the Arab World

Outcome A.1. Explain the literary, artistic or scientific traditions of the Arab world

Outcome A.2. Analyze the interdependencies between the Arab Gulf region, the Middle East and the world at large

Goal B. Examine the values and ideas that have shaped the Western intellectual and cultural traditions

Outcome B.1. Describe intellectual and cultural traditions of the Western world

Outcome B.2. Analyze and explain how Western traditions have influenced the present

Goal C. Explore how modes of human inquiry or expression enhances our understanding of culture

Outcome C.1. Analyze cultural ideals and values in order to enhance self understanding and empathy for others

Outcome C.2. Explain how societies are defined in relation to culture, nationality, race, ethnicity, or gender

Outcome C.3. Analyze and explain implied and expressed cultural values and attitudes in works of literature (literary perspectives)

Outcome C.4. Analyze and explain the development of human institutions, ideas, and social structures (historical perspectives)

Outcome C.5. Analyze and explain philosophical works that present perspectives on social and cultural issues or problems (philosophical perspectives)

Goal D. Appreciate the roles of creative endeavors in enriching the human condition

Outcome D.1 Identify, interpret, and explain themes in works of literature or art (study of arts/literature)

Goal E. Reflect on the consequences of individual and collective human action

Outcome E.1. Explain the ways in which individuals, groups, institutions or societies behave and influence one another

Outcome E.2. Analyze and describe how social, cultural, political or economic conditions affect individuals

Outcome E.3. Analyze and explain human behavior in a variety of contexts
