A Talk by Mark Z. Danielewski (November 2013)
The AUS Department of English and the Sharjah International Book Fair present a talk by Mark Z. Danielewski
American poet and fiction writer Mark Z. Danielewski was born in New York City in 1966. In 1988, he graduated from Yale, where he studied English Literature. In 1993, he graduated with an MFA from USC's School of Cinematic Arts. In 2000, Pantheon Books published his first novel, House of Leaves. The book became an international bestseller, and won the New York Public Library Young Lions Fiction Award. The book has since been translated into numerous languages, and has inspired songs, exhibits, paintings, videos, and tattoos.
In 2006, Pantheon published Only Revolutions, a New York Times bestseller, and a National Book Award finalist.
Danielewski's poetry and fiction have also appeared in Conjunctions, Bookforum, Black Clock, and Tin House, among others. Speaking engagements have included the Centre Pompidou, many universities, as well as the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne, where he delivered "Parable #9: The Hopeless Animal and the End of Nature." In 2011, a conference called Revolutionary Leaves: The Fiction of Mark Z. Danielewski convened in Munich. That same year, Manchester University Press published Mark Z. Danielewski, an academic book devoted to his work.
On Halloween 2010-2012, Danielewski directed and performed in sold-out performances of The Fifty Year Sword at Walt Disney Concert Hall's REDCAT Theater. The 2012 performance coincided with Pantheon's US release and Danielewski's nationwide book tour for The Fifty Year Sword.
He is currently writing The Familiar, a 27-volume novel about a 12-year-old girl who finds a kitten.
