Achieving Intercultural Competence: How to Survive and Thrive with Culture Shock
Presentation by Erika Alhashmi
Entering into any new environment always has its stressful challenges, but moving to a foreign country can present psychological challenges that can be extremely painful if not understood and handled properly. The shock of experiencing a new culture is characterized by an emotional disorientation that is a result from the continued unexpected situations from the new culture. This is a completely normal process and is experienced by everyone regardless of the number of countries that they have visited.
The hour-long seminar will present the following topics:
- What is culture shock?
- Why does it happen?
- What does it look like?
- Models/theories on its stages or characteristics
- Tips for surviving and thriving
- When to worry and what to do about
