Advances in Mobile Telemedicine & IoT (Internet of Things) and the Future of MBAN (Medical Body Area Networks)
The talk will shed light on the ongoing research in telemedicine utilizing RFID and biosensors for the well-being of the elderly suffering from Alzheimer's disease, in addition to presenting the state-of-the-art advances in IoT for healthcare.
Speaker: Dr. Muhammad Wasim Raad, Head of RFID Lab, Computer Engineering Department, King Fahd University of Petroleum Minerals (KFUPM)
Dr. Raad joined the Computer Engineering Department of KFUPM in 1986 where he worked as a lecturer and researcher in the field of smart cards and RFID. He obtained his PhD from the University of Bradford, UK, in 2005 in Embedded Systems. He gave consultations to a number of companies in the region, in addition to a number of workshops and tutorials on smart cards and RFID. He recently gave a half-day workshop in E-tagging in Abu Dhabi on RFID in the oil and gas sector. In 2010, he established the first Smart Card and RFID University Lab in the region to support student projects as well as to conduct short courses for the industry in RFID/NFC.
He was involved in following funded projects:
- Smart Card Management System (KACST)
- Adhoc Sensor Network for Sandstorm Detection (KACST)
- Development of a Portable PC Based Bi-lingual Telehealth Monitoring System for the Elderly and the Disabled (KFUPM)
Dr. Raad also has a US patent in RFID: "System and Method for Controlling Vehicle Ignition." He presented a paper on his research titled “RFID Based Telemedicine System for Localizing Elderly with Chronic Diseases” in the Third EAI conference on IOT Technologies for Healthcare held October 18-19, 2016 in Vasteras, Sweden.
