Classifications of C*--Algebras
On behalf of Mathematics and Statistics Department under the College of Arts and Sciences, you are cordially invited on a Seminar to be conducted by Ahmed Al-Rawashdeh from the Department of Mathematical Sciences of UAEU, Al Ain UAE.
Abstract: The abstract definition of C*-algebras was introduced by I. Segal in 1947, based on results of von Neumann and Gelfand-Naimark. A short history of operator algebras will be given. We will present the definition of C*--algebras and main examples. The subject of K-theory, which is invented by E. Grothendieck and M. Atiya, is a main tool of classification of C*--algebras, this work mainly done by G. Elliott and others. Another tool used is the unitary groups, which was the approach of H. Dye in 1955, in the case of von Neumann algebras. Using Dye's approach and extending the results to the case of simple C*--algebras, we show that for a large class, the unitary groups of such algebras are complete invariant.
