The Cultural Events Committee and the AUS Iraqi Cultural club present a performance by Furat Qaddouri and his fusion band. Furat will play a fusion of Arabic, jazz, Latin and classical tunes, taking you on a cultural and spiritual journey.

About the Performer

Furant was born in Baghdad to a prominent family of musicians. His father, Hussein Qaddouri, was a musicologist who specialized in childrens' folk songs and rhymes.

Furat is one of the world's prominent qanoun players and composers. A graduate of the Baghdad School of Music and Ballet, Furat extended the usage of qanoun into being a solo instrument and has succeeded in bringing out its unique and expressive tunes. He has participated in several international events that enabled him to mix and incorporate the rhythm of various cultures, specifically with jazz and Latin tunes.

In 1998 in Jordan, Furat released his first album, Mesopotamian Qanoun. This album successfully proved his ability to play the qanoun as a stand-alone instrument. His second album was entitled The Spirit Calls. His relocation to Belgium, Germany and the United Arab Emirates increased his cultural awareness and expanded his musical capabilities. His third album, yet another more mature achievement, was Hanging Gardens, which is a tale about two people vowing eternal love to each other. Furat uses the qanoun as the central key-instrument and links it in a fun-dialogical approach with other instruments, incorporating traditional Iraqi music and other Middle Eastern rhythms.

Furat is the founder of the Furat Qaddouri Music Center, the first music and ballet academy in Sharjah (http://www.furatmusiccenter.com/).

Tickets are on sale at the Cashier's Office (AUS Main Building) or at the door prior to the concert.
