Under the Patronage of H.H. Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Court and Ruler of SharjahRegional Symposium: "Protection of Cultural Heritage in Times of Crisis"
Objectives and expected results
The purpose of the workshop is to establish a regional working framework to guide national policies for heritage protection in times of crisis in relation to planning, infrastructure, law and public awareness. It will present relevant case studies arising from threats and damage caused through war, intolerance, civil unrest, theft & illicit traffic of cultural artefacts. It will seek to understand how their impact on heritage might be minimized.
As a result of the recent social as well as political upheavals in several countries of the Arab region, the cultural heritage has been negatively impacted. This workshop therefore aims to assess:
- How and which type of cultural heritage has been and is being damaged?
- What weaknesses in the current heritage protection systems have been identified during the recentevents?
- What measures can be taken to recover damaged cultural heritage?
- What role cultural heritage can play in recovery and reconciliation?
In addition, one output will be the publication of the proceedings. The symposium will be in English and Arabic, with simultaneous translation.
