Special talk by Senator George J. Mitchell
Renowned American politician, attorney and statesman Senator George J. Mitchell will deliver a special lecture at on October 22. The lecture will focus on world affairs with an emphasis on the Middle East and North Africa and the challenges facing US President Obama in his second term of office. He will also reflect on his time as US Special Envoy for Middle East Peace.
Since his retirement from the US Senate in 1995, Senator Mitchell has taken up a variety of roles in politics and diplomacy. He has played a leading part in negotiations for peace in Northern Ireland and the Middle East, being specifically appointed United States Special Envoy for Northern Ireland (1995-2001) by President Clinton and as United States Special Envoy for Middle East Peace (2009-2011) by President Obama.
In 2008, Time magazine named Senator Mitchell as one of the 100 most influential persons in the world. He serves on the board of several international companies and is the author of four books: Men of Zeal; World on Fire; Not for America Alone: the Triumph of Democracy and The Fall of Communism; and Making Peace.
