Dr. James Onley is a Senior Lecturer in Middle Eastern History and Director of the Center for Gulf Studies at the University of Exeter. His doctoral thesis from Oxford won the PhD of the Year Award from the British Society for Middle Eastern Studies. He is the author of The Arabian Frontier of the British Raj: Merchants, Rulers, and The British in the Nineteenth Century Gulf (Oxford University Press, 2007), which was runner-up for the Middle East Studies Association's Book of the Year Award. He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and the Royal Asiatic Society.
