The Practice in Making New Sound Performances and Instruments
Hear - Listen - Here workshop by Takuro Mizuta Lippit
What is the difference to hear and listen, to play and play-back, to compose and improvise? What is sound and what is music? These are notions that 20th Century Western composers and musicians challenged as new technologies emerged for sound reproduction, amplification and distribution. Their pursuit reminds us that our world is not only built from visual information but through an integrated experience with sound, touch and memory. Today, with the advent of digital technology, we have a chance to communicate with a high level of integration between different mediums. However unless we understand what the experience and the potential of each media is, we will not succeed in creating anything convincing.
Hear - Listen - Here is an introductory workshop into sound and how we can create an experience from non-visual elements. Students will learn about basic concepts of sound in relationship to space, time and narrative through exercises like sound walks, field recordings, feedback, improvisation and composition. Students who have experience with music are encouraged to bring their instruments, but no prior knowledge to music or sound is needed to follow the workshop.
