AUS celebrates 339 distinguished students at Honors Convocation
American University of Sharjah (AUS) honored the academic achievements of 339 of its top students for Fall 2014 and Spring 2015 at the Annual Honors Convocation held on Thursday, November 19, 2015 in the Main Auditorium on campus.
The number of students honored at this year's convocation was the highest in the history of the university as AUS recognized students for demonstrating exceptional discipline, commitment and dedication towards their academics. Last year, 318 students were honored.
To qualify for this list, a student must have met the following requirements in the past consecutive semesters: named to the Dean's List; maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.5 out of 4.0 or above; registered in a minimum of 15 credit hours; had no incomplete or failing grades in any courses; and had no disciplinary action against him/her.
Speaking on the occasion, AUS Chancellor Dr. Björn Kjerfve congratulated the students on their achievement and said the occasion celebrated the academic success of the university's most accomplished students. Dr. Kjerfve said, "It is a special occasion for us to acknowledge and celebrate the academic success of our most accomplished students. American University of Sharjah (AUS) has earned renown throughout the Gulf region and beyond for its academic excellence. Your hard work has played a great part in helping the university achieve that reputation."
"I feel it is very important to mention the incredible support and encouragement that you have received from your families, who have played a significant part in your success," added Dr Kjerfve. "I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to you on your remarkable achievements. You should be very proud of your success."
This year, out of the total students honored, 199 were female students and 140 were male. An impressive 64 students received Gold awards, which represents being recognized at Honors Convocation for the third or fourth time, 102 students received Silver awards representing a second recognition and 173 students were presented Bronze awards for their first year on the prestigious list.
Omar Wassim Salah, a bronze medal winner said, "This is a moment that both my parents and I have waited for and are proud of. Hard work really does pay off and I will continue on this path."
The College of Engineering had the largest number of distinguished students at 178, followed by the School of Business Administration with 85; the College of Architecture, Art and Design with 39; and the College of Arts and Sciences with 37.
Kevin Mitchell, Interim Provost, also addressed the students and congratulated them on their success. "It is an honor and a privilege to preside over this event that recognizes the academic achievement of students. We have come together this evening to celebrate our most distinguished students and on behalf of the faculty and the administration of American University of Sharjah, I am pleased to extend a very warm welcome to the students whom we honor tonight."
The evening also saw the Sheikh Khalifa Scholarships being awarded to four exceptional students. The scholarship is awarded to juniors and seniors and recognizes academic excellence, leadership potential, service to community, demonstrated talent in the field of study and participation in extracurricular and university activities. Awarded through an annual competition conducted within each college/school, it is granted for up to four consecutive semesters or until graduation requirements are complete.
Reema Abu Hassan from the College of Architecture, Art and Design; Sakeena Khatri from the College of Arts and Sciences; Nouran Elmessalami from the College of Engineering; and Husain Rangwalla from the School of Business and Management were declared the recipients of this prestigious scholarship.
The event was also attended by other senior university officials; faculty members; students and their family members.
