AUS star alumna behind skills program benefitting over 1 million people

Zain Masri, graduate of American University of Sharjah (AUS) and Head of Brand and Reputation Marketing at Google Middle East and North Africa, is using her position to help people throughout the Arab World to learn the digital skills necessary to progress their career or grow their business. As part of her current role, she has launched several digital skills programs, including Maharat min Google, a digital skills program that has trained over 1 million people across the Arab World. Of those undertaking the training, 50 percent have been women and 54 percent of those trained have either found a job or grown in their business or career as a result. Zain is also responsible for YouTube Batala, a content hub featuring more than 400 female creators from across the Arab World.

This is just one of many achievements of Masri, who has been trail-blazing since her graduation from AUS in 2012. Her accomplishments have seen her named on the prestigious “30 Under 30” Forbes Middle East list of 2020, a list identifying young innovators working to change the region. In addition, she is a Youth Fellow of the International Monetary Fund and a United Nations Women Gender Innovation Agora Youth Advocate, positions which allow her to promote the interests of young people in the Middle East, and beyond.

The Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication graduate credits her AUS experience with allowing her to reach great career heights, and her strong sense of community involvement.

“I really enjoyed the practical and hands-on approach of the courses within the AUS program because it helped me apply my knowledge through interactive experiences. Graduating from AUS made me better prepared to join the workforce. The classes and connections I made during my time at AUS strengthened my passion and inspired me to aim for high career goals and also to give back to the wider community,” she said.

For existing students or for graduates just entering the workforce, Masri provides some valuable advice. “I would recommend that graduates stay connected with fellow alumni and professors as they explore their careers. The AUS alumni community is filled with support and incredible opportunities. I would also recommend that graduates have an open mindset when it comes to new opportunities, whether they are internships, fellowships, volunteering opportunities or participating in programs. These initiatives will help you expand your network, grow your profile and gain new experiences.”

AUS offers students valuable opportunities for work experience. Students undertake internship programs with leading organizations throughout the Middle East, and often find employment with such organizations upon completion of their degree. Such organizations include Proctor & Gamble, KPMG, L’Oreal and many others. Career guidance is also a key element of an AUS student’s experience, with career counseling offered from the first semester a student joins the university.
