AUS student-athletes attend Kirikkale University Friendship and Fellowship Games
Fifty AUS student-athletes representing eight sports teams participated in the first Friendship and Fellowship Games organized by Kirikkale University in Turkey held March 31-April 5, 2013.
AUS men's teams participated in soccer, volleyball, swimming, table tennis and badminton. AUS women's teams participated in basketball, swimming and table tennis. Matches were arranged in women's basketball and men's soccer and volleyball with the Middle East Technical University, which is the one of the leading universities in Turkey.
Exciting matches were held in soccer, basketball, volleyball, table tennis and badminton but the final results were not in favor of AUS due to the comparatively stronger teams of Kirikkale University, which has a major in physical education. The AUS women's table tennis team made a clean sweep of the opponents with a 3-0 win.
The scene was different in the Olympic 50-meter pool in Ankara, where AUS women and men swimmers dominated the water with most of the titles. Four male and four female AUS swimmers excelled in individual and relay races.
Aside from the sporting experience, AUS students interacted with various students of different cultures and travelled to the ancient town of Cappadocia.
The opening ceremony of the games was held at Kirikkale University and the Rector Dr. Ekrem Yildiz inaugurated the Friendship Games in the presence of Mr. Khalid Khalifa Al-Mualla, Ambassador of the UAE to Turkey.
The games concluded on April 4 with an official closing ceremony and awards. Dr. Mohamed Helal, Director of Student Athletics and Recreation and head of the AUS delegation, thanked the organizers for the well-conducted games and for the wealthy cultural exchange between the students.
Dr. Moza Al Shehhi, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, congratulated the athletes on their participation and emphasized the importance of such international participation. She advised the students to take part in more extracurricular activities and develop their talents.
