AUS students create toys for orphans
Inspired by the Hand in Hand Project of renovating orphans' homes, a group of student volunteers from the American University of Sharjah (AUS) Community Services division launched the Toy Stories Initiative to create hand-stitched toys for orphans. More than 70 students participated in the first two days of the initiative, November 2-3, which was then extended until November 4 due to the overwhelming response from students.
During the toy creation process, students with experience in creating and stitching toys coached other students on the step-by-step process. Using their creativity, the students created more than 60 handcrafted toys that will be presented to orphans.
"I am very glad to see how our students have responded positively to this initiative," said Dr. Moza Al Shehhi, Dean of Students. "Our students have not only created toys but works of art that I am sure the orphans will appreciate and enjoy. I thank our students for doing a great job," she added.
The initiative was conceptualized by a group of volunteers led by Karan Gurnani, a student majoring in finance. He was inspired by the idea of using one's creativity, time and effort to come up with something that will be valued and appreciated. "We thank the Office of Student Affairs' Community Services division for supporting this initiative and for providing all requirements and materials to make this project a success," he said.
Due to popular student demand, Community Services is preparing to conduct the project on a weekly basis with more supplies and an expanded workshop.
