Provost and Chief Academic Officer

Dr. Susan L. Karamanian began her tenure at AUS in 2017 and serves as the Provost and Chief Academic Officer of the University. The Provost provides vision, leadership, and operational direction for the Deans, academic Department Heads, and Directors of the academic support services. The Provost is also responsible for ensuring that the University's curriculum and programs of research and service continuously strive to improve in quality and content, consistent with the rising standards and overall mission of the institution. Serving under the Chancellor as the second officer of administration, the Provost is empowered to act on behalf of the Chancellor in his absence.

Dr. Karamanian has extensive administrative experience in both academia as well as in the private sector. Prior to joining AUS, she was the Associate Dean for International and Comparative Legal Studies at the George Washington University Law School, Washington, DC, as well as the Burnett Family Professorial Lecturer in International and Comparative Law and Policy. Her role encompassed administrative, academic and outreach responsibilities. Before moving to George Washington University, Dr. Karamanian was a Partner in Locke Lord LLP (Dallas, Texas) where she represented clients in both U.S. federal and state courts.

Dr. Karamanian holds a JD from the University of Texas. She was a Rhodes Scholar at the University of Oxford where she received a BA (Hons) in philosophy, politics and economics. She also has a BS in economics from Auburn University. Dr. Karamanian is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and has held various senior positions in a number of organizations including the American Society of International Law; Association of American Rhodes Scholars; Center for American and International Law; Dallas Bar Association; Kuwait International Law School; and Washington Foreign Law Society among others. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the American Council on Germany.

In addition, Dr. Karamanian is the recipient of the Equal Justice Award, Legal Services of North Texas; and the Texas Law Fellowships Excellence in Public Interest Award, University of Texas School of Law; as well as several pro bono awards sponsored by the Dallas Bar Association. Her academic scholarship is in the field of international law with a focus on international dispute resolution.
