1.2 The Faculty Research Grant (FRG) Fund

The Faculty Research Grant (FRG) is an annual spring competition. Calls for proposals are issued late in the fall semester and proposals are due the first Tuesday in March, annually. Proposals are evaluated and grant funds awarded before the end of the spring semester.

The FRG has several purposes:

  • Support development of AUS research programs
  • Stimulate external support
  • Support faculty in developing pilot projects, exploratory studies and preliminary data necessary to prepare competitive proposals for external funding
  • Support exemplary research of faculty working in fields where external sponsor interest is currently limited
  • Complement research programs elsewhere in the university

Generally, two types of FRGs are awarded:

  • On-campus projects to be conducted during the academic year
  • Projects requiring travel to conduct research or data collection and analysis

All full-time teaching faculty members are eligible for a FRG including faculty members who have previously received seed grants and FRGs.

Both individual and collaborative proposals are eligible—with awards not exceeding Dhs. 25,000 for individual investigator proposals and Dhs. 30,000 for collaborative proposals.

The FRG supports:

  • Purchase of equipment (Some restrictions apply; see the current Call for Proposals.)
  • Purchase of data, books, publications, journal subscriptions
  • Purchase of laboratory and other supplies
  • Travel related to the proposed conduct of the research
  • Publication costs—including indexing and editing
  • Student research assistants—both graduate and undergraduate
  • Laboratory technicians
  • To a limited extent, consultants and collaborators external to AUS
  • Course release time with the concurrence of the faculty member’s dean

Ineligible expenditures include travel funds to participate in professional meetings or conferences and projects that are part of a faculty member’s normal duties.

The Call for Proposals details proposal guide lines, including required format and evaluation criteria. Contact the Office of Research for additional information.
