The department of Mass Communication at the American University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, is opening a faculty position in Advertising. Candidates will have a proven record in teaching theoretical and practical courses in advertising. The ideal candidate will have educational background in advertising coupled with industry and teaching experience. A PhD or terminal degree is required as well as good publication/research record. In addition to teaching and supervising students, the faculty member is expected to contribute in the department development and to show an interest in networking with the industry locally and regionally. The appointment is for three years, renewable.

Technical Director/Scenic and Lighting Designer
Theatre: The American University of Sharjah is inviting faculty applications for a Technical Director/Scenic and Lighting Designer to begin in Fall 2010. Responsibilities: teach courses in Theatre Appreciation, Stage Management, Stagecraft I and II, and other courses at the undergraduate level; supervise technical elements of theatre and music events affiliated with the Department of Performing Arts; design and construct scenic and lighting elements for theatre productions; comprehension of and experience implementing sound elements is a plus. This individual will be instrumental in writing new courses in technical theatre and developing a theatre program begun in January 2008. Piano Faculty
Music: The American University of Sharjah is inviting applications for a full-time piano faculty for the 2010-2011 academic year. The American University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates invites applications for a faculty position in psychology within the Department of International Studies. In over ten years since its founding in 1997, AUS has emerged as the leading university in the Gulf and surrounding regions, growing from 250 to over 5,000 students. The psychology lab at AUS continues to expand its activities, with a large and diverse participant pool, courses for undergraduate research, and advanced research technology.
Located in the Sharjah-Dubai metropolitan area, AUS is fully accredited with the North American system and offers a generous compensation package, free campus housing, support for research, and other benefits. There is no income tax in the UAE.
We are interested in applicants (PhD or ABD) with expertise in clinical psychology especially, but we welcome applications from other fields. Department Head for the Department of Arabic and Translation Studies |
The College of Arts and Sciences is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Head of Department (HOD) opening in the Department of Arabic and Translation Studies for Fall 2010.
The mission of the Department of Arabic & Translation Studies is to cultivate students’ knowledge and understanding of Arabic language and literature, Arab and Islamic studies, and Arabic/English translation and intercultural studies with the aim of preparing its graduates for academic and professional success. Currently, the department consists of fifteen full time faculty members and offers a Master of Arts in English/Arabic/English Translation and Interpreting (MATI), as well as a minor in Arabic language and literature, and a minor in English/Arabic Translation. The prospective HOD is expected to provide good leadership in the development of undergraduate majors in Arabic, Islamic and translation studies.
The successful candidate should satisfy the following requirements:
- be at the rank of associate professor or professor
- Hold a PhD in Arabic language and literature, translation studies, or related fields.
- Have experience and/or familiarity with North American higher educational system
- Have native or near native proficiency in both Arabic and English
- Have strong teaching and scholarly publication records
- Have a minimum of 3 years administrative experience, preferably as HOD or director of an Arabic/Translation program
- Be able to deal efficiently with people from diverse cultural and educational backgrounds
- Be familiar with the Middle East.
The HOD receives a three- year administrative contract, renewable at three year increments. However, UAE law prohibits people over 65 from receiving multiple year contracts. Contracts for people over 65 are renewed on a yearly basis. HODs are expected to teach one course per semester, and are responsible for budget development and implementation, department planning, faculty and staff development, personnel evaluations, and curriculum development and facilitation. The Ph.D. candidate will teach a three-course load and have research responsibilities. The M.A. instructors will teach a four-course load and focus on teaching. Candidates should have at least two years of experience in teaching composition at the university or community college level, preferably in North American institutions.
