EACWelcome to the Department of Mechanical Engineering at American University of Sharjah

The mechanical engineering curriculum is a four-year program leading to a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME). Many courses throughout the curriculum have incorporated design projects into the classroom experience. After their junior year, students participate in a summer internship program that requires them to work in an engineering environment for no less than six weeks. Before graduation, all students complete a yearlong senior design project. Past projects included a controlled hovercraft, a Mini-Baja style all-terrain car and a heavy-lift aircraft. Some current seniors are initiating the design of a Formula SAE racecar.

Graduates of the BSME program have been employed by local, national and international corporations and have pursued graduate studies in the United States, United Kingdom and Australia.

The program’s faculty members have special interests and expertise in the thermo-fluid area (turbomachines, aerodynamics, energy systems, refrigeration and air conditioning, design of thermal systems, power plant economics, energy management systems); the dynamics, control and mechatronics area (system dynamics, vehicle design, modeling and simulation); and the materials, manufacturing and design area (composite materials, polymers, fatigue, fracture mechanics, modeling and optimization of machining processes, fixture dynamics and CAD/CAM/CAE).
