Events

Being a part of the Student Leadership Program (SLP) ensures that you have an event-filled academic year.

We believe that student participation in events plays an important role in developing character and leadership skills. Over the last year, the SLP has engaged students in numerous leadership events and opportunities that included local, regional and international involvement.

Events in Fall 2011

September 8, 2011: A group of 57 dynamic students at American University of Sharjah (AUS) attended a special orientation and training workshop held recently as part of the Peer Leaders Program for this year. The workshop, organized by the university's Office of Student Affairs, was conducted by former student leaders who were promoted to team leaders this year.

September 9, 2011:  Peer leaders at American University of Sharjah (AUS) took an active role during the new student orientation week held recently and recruited over 125 freshmen into the Emerging Leaders Program.
The program introduces new students to the Student Leadership Program (SLP). It helps them connect with campus life and encourages them to get involved in college activities. Peer leaders "adopt" new students and encourage them to begin thinking about the leadership opportunities at AUS by enrolling them in the Emerging Leaders Program.

October 5, 2011:  The American University of Sharjah (AUS) Student Leadership Program, in cooperation with the Egyptian Cultural Club, hosted acclaimed motivational speaker Omar Samra on Wednesday, October 5. Samra is the first Egyptian and the youngest Arab to climb Mount Everest.

October 15, 2011:  The Student Leadership Program (SLP) at American University of Sharjah (AUS) held its first Leaders Edutainment Day (LED) on Saturday, October 15 as a new initiative under the Emerging Leaders Program.  Designed for freshmen, the event focused on developing leadership skills through meaningful team building exercises with an emphasis on leadership traits. The event began with an ice breaking session in which team leaders asked freshmen to introduce themselves and talk about their hobbies, favorite sports, books and lifestyle.

October 20-22, 2011:  Four American University of Sharjah (AUS) students won first prize at Dubai Startup Weekend held October 20−22. This intense 54-hour event focuses on creating a web or mobile application that eventually forms the beginning of a credible business.

October 27, 2011:  American University of Sharjah (AUS) honored six outstanding students by presenting them with the Active Student Scholarship awards at a special ceremony held on campus today, Thursday, October 27. Dr. Peter Heath, Chancellor of AUS, along with Dr. Moza Al Shehhi, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, and other officials of the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) presented the winners with their awards.

November 4-15, 2011:  Students from the Student Leadership Program at American University of Sharjah (AUS) embarked on an expedition during the Eid break to climb Mount Kilimanjaro,  one of the world's seven summits and tallest freestanding mountain. Adi Hassan Al Fardan and Khalifa Al Thani climbed the highest peak standing at 5,895 meters (19,340 feet) above sea level. Dubbed the rooftop of Africa, Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in the continent, located in northeastern Tanzania near the border of Kenya.

November 20-24, 2011:  Students from the Student Leadership Program at American University of Sharjah (AUS) won fourth place in the World Red Bull Can Car Racing Competition. The competition involved designing and racing a remote controlled car around a scaled-down track.

November 21, 2011:  The Office of Student Affairs' Student Leadership Program at American University of Sharjah (AUS) recently conducted DISC analysis training as part of the Student Training and Workshop Series. The purpose of the workshop is to provide students with training opportunities that sharpen and develop their skills as well as prepare them for successful leadership.

November 24-25, 2011:  An eight-member delegation from the Student Leadership Program represented American University of Sharjah (AUS) at Bahrain Universities Model United Nations (BUMUN) 2011, November 24-25, 2011. The event was held under the patronage of His Excellency Hisham Mohammed Al Jowder, President of the General Organization for Youth and Sports, Bahrain.

December 14, 2011:  The Student Leadership Program of the Office of Student Affairs at American University of Sharjah (AUS) in collaboration with Al Tamimi Investment (ATI) held an introductory session for the Big Start Competition, a search platform for commercially viable start-up business ideas, on Wednesday, December 14, 2011.

Events in Summer 2011

June 24-August 6, 2011:  The Global Village program provided a meeting point for students from all over the world. Members of the Student Leadership Program at AUS recently completed an intensive six-week leadership and cross cultural training program at the Global Village for Future Leaders of Business and Industry held at Leigh University, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, USA. The program gave students the opportunity to meet with business leaders and learn from their leadership practices.

January−March 2011: AUS students attended Women's Leadership Program - USA
Five women students from AUS attended a special leadership training program offered by the Study of US Institutes for Student Leaders (SUSI), at the Institute on Women's Leadership at the University of Minnesota in the United States.

January 25, 2011: Students take part in Second Leadership Congress - UAE
Students from the SLP program attended the Second Leadership Congress organized by Aleem Business Congress and held at the Radisson SAS, Sharjah. The summit focused on leadership styles and traits, creating solutions, making decisions, living like leaders, empowering people for results, transformable leadership and much more.

February 4, 2011: Peer Leaders adopt freshmen during new student orientation - UAE
This new program is designed to ease freshmen into AUS, by the means of a peer leader "adopting" two to five freshmen and being their guide, mentor and friend.

March 6, 2011: AUS Students secure most Outstanding Delegation Award at Rome Model United Nations - Italy
As the first and only university from the Middle East to take part in the Rome Model United Nations (RomeMUN) conference, AUS sent a six-member delegation of students from the university's Student Leadership Program, two of whom were subsequently granted the Most Outstanding Delegation Award.

March-August, 2011: CIMA Global Business Challenge 2011 - UAE
AUS Students participated in the 2011 Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) Global Business Challenge (GBC), an international competition giving students an opportunity to test the depth of their financial knowledge, business management skills and expand upon their competitive ability.

March 28, 2011: Young Entrepreneur Competition 2011 (YEC) - UAE
AUS students took part in the Young Entrepreneurship Competition (YEC) 2011. This event gave students from different private and public high schools, colleges and universities across the UAE the opportunity to meet and set up stands and sell their products in a competitive environment. The competition aimed to educate students on the basic principles of opening and operating a private business and to motivate them to become entrepreneurs.

March 31, 2011: Students attend lecture by NASA astronaut Marsha Ivins - UAE
SLP students attended a lecture by Marsha Ivins, an American astronaut who spent over 1009 hours in space. Ivins' lecture included photos of her time in space and discussed how her determination, passion and goal setting enabled her to become an astronaut.

April 4, 2011: Students participate in Training Session - UAE
SLP students were given the opportunity to attend a "Train the Trainer" session workshop on the student online course management system, Blackboard. Students that completed the workshop are qualified to lead future trainings in Blackboard.

April 26, 2011: AUS Student Leadership Conference (ASLC11) - UAE
SLP held its first AUS Student Leadership Conference 2011 (ASLC'11) intended to educate, inspire and motivate student leaders by giving them the opportunity to meet with professionals in the field of leadership. Students heard keynote speeches from Richard Brandt, Director of the Iacocca Institute, Sheikh Sultan Sooud Al Qassimi, Founder and Chairman of Barjeel Securities and Badr Jafar, Executive Director of the Crescent Petroleum Group.

May 16, 2011: AUS students attend Islam and the West Conference - UAE
Students from SLP participated in a two-day conference entitled "Islam and the West: A Civilized Dialogue" in Abu Dhabi. The conference aimed to enhance the mutual understanding and communication between Muslims and Western cultures and create a better understanding of coexistence.

June 26, 2011: Global Village For Future Leaders of Business and Industry - USA
Two students from SLP attended the Global Village For Future Leaders of Business and Industry in Lehigh University, Pennsylvania, USA, which gives students the opportunity to meet with over 90 young professionals and college students from all over the world to build leadership and entrepreneurial skills, enhance business and industry knowledge, and expand cultural understanding.

September 22, 2010: SLP launches successful Peer Leaders Program at AUS - UAE
Twenty six students from SLP attended a special orientation and training workshop to serve as AUS Peer Leaders for the entire academic year 2010−2011.

Over 100 AUS freshmen registered for the Emerging Leaders Program, which aims to provide freshmen with a chance to participate in a wide range of activities and leadership opportunities planned for the upcoming academic year.

November 3, 2010: "The Big Start" competition meeting - UAE
Student Leadership Program held a meeting for the "The Big Start" competition, an annual student entrepreneur competition in which students get an opportunity to present their business plan and the winner receives full financial support from Al Tamimi Investments to run his/her business after graduating.

November 8, 2010: Student Training and Workshop Series launched - UAE
Students from SLP attended a series of workshops which aimed to provide them with training opportunities that sharpen and develop their skills, and prepare them for leadership roles.

December 9, 2010: AUS students secure diplomacy awards during BUMUN 2010 - Bahrain
AUS students Hossam Shoman, Mohammad Hukan and Mohamed Metwally won the Diplomacy Awards for Outstanding Performance in the Sixth Annual Bahrain Universities Model United Nations (BUMUN).
