Research | American University of Sharjah

Welcome to the home of research at American University of Sharjah (AUS). This site aims to provide more detail regarding research, scholarly and creative activities at the university and direct you to resources for supporting your research interests and scholarly work.

Scholarship is woven into the fabric of education in the 21st century. Education, once focused on knowledge learning, has transformed into a means of knowledge discovery. New knowledge discovered has the potential to improve our lives, advance our communities, and profoundly benefit humanity and the environment. More importantly, the process of discovery continually allows researchers (whether students, faculty, scientists, or clinicians) to challenge their limits while making indelible contributions to the world. Conducting research is similar to athletic pursuits; for example, running. While one can argue there are practical applications to running (e.g., escaping a chasing animal!), most runners would acknowledge this is not the reason why they run. Instead, they would cite the health and mental benefits, and the fact that the awards they reap extend far beyond the miles they dedicate to running. Similarly, the results of research extend far beyond their own (undeniably important) practical implications in that the researcher is enriched by their own pursuit for knowledge and discovery. Both pursuits of research and sport play a role in uniting people to applaud for and support their communities. Just as the UAE’s Mars mission has brought together the people of this country, so too did athlete Sergiu Toma in 2016 upon bringing home UAE’s first Olympic medal since 2004.
American University of Sharjah is transforming into an internationally recognized research-comprehensive university, while continuing to excel in its tradition of high caliber, American-style liberal arts education. Achieved with the continued support of the university’s patron, His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council of the United Arab Emirates, Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University, our students and faculty are making groundbreaking discoveries, developing novel innovations, and engaging in exciting collaborations, while enriching and achieving their scholarly pursuits.
Once again, welcome! It is truly exciting to observe the researchers of our AUS community embracing this very exciting moment in our university’s history; the opportunity to venture boldly into the future via our own curiosity and commitment to progress. Read on to learn about and be inspired by the research projects being undertaken by our dedicated AUS faculty and students.
