Technical Director-Designer

The American University of Sharjah invites applications for the position of Technical Director-Designer for Fall 2014. Responsibilities: Serve as Technical Director for program theater productions, lighting design for all events, coordinate student crews to serve as technical operators for music and dance events. Opportunities to scene design are possible. This individual will teach one class in area of expertise along with Theatre Appreciation, manage the technical labs, be responsible for the production calendar, and serve on committees as requested. Other program duties may be assigned. Experience in lighting design required, scenic design experience is an asset. Knowledge of sound design is beneficial. Knowledge of LED lighting systems is a plus. Terminal degree required. Experience with international students preferred.  Willingness to contribute to a new and expanding program a must. One-Year Visiting Faculty Position in Modernist or Post-Modernist / Post-Colonial Literature

The American University of Sharjah, an internationally ranked and accredited American-style university of 6000 students in the United Arab Emirates, seeks a visiting faculty member for a one-year full-time appointment to teach courses in Modernism and Post-Modernist/Post-Colonial literature in English and Writing  for Academic Purposes in the Department of English.  The Department of English is especially interested in candidates demonstrating a secondary interest in such areas as: Film, Gender or Cultural Studies, and globalization and literature.

Successful candidates will have a Ph.D. in a relevant field, a record of excellent teaching, active scholarly publication, and a commitment to productive institutional service. Faculty position in History

The Department of International Studies at the American University of Sharjah (United Arab Emirates) is seeking a historian who specializes in Middle Eastern history to teach a range of courses on the modern Middle East as well as survey courses in World History. The department seeks candidates who are not only committed to both teaching and research excellence, but who can also contribute to a rich interdisciplinary atmosphere. The successful candidate will have experience with the North American higher educational system and have perfect mastery of English. Head of the Department of International Studies

Applications are invited for the position of Head of the Department of International Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences at the American University of Sharjah (AUS).

Qualifications

  • A PhD in Political Science, History, Anthropology, Philosophy, or Sociology
  • A current rank of professor or associate professor
  • Experience with North American liberal arts education
  • Demonstrated leadership experience, preferably in chairing a department of International Studies, Political Science, History, Anthropology, Philosophy, or Sociology

The International Studies Department currently has 18 full-time faculty members in six academic disciplines (Political Science, History, Anthropology, Philosophy, Sociology, and Psychology). The Department offers a well-subscribed Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies as well as a number of discipline-specific and interdisciplinary minors. It is a dynamic and collegial department with a steadily growing number of students and an active and motivated student organization. Assistant Professors (or higher rank - 2 positions) Technical Director and Ethnomusicologist with Middle Eastern focus

The American University of Sharjah Performing Arts Program invites applications for two positions: Technical Director and an Ethnomusicology with a Middle-Eastern focus for Fall 2014. Responsibilities for TD: Serve as Technical Director for Performing Art Program performances including theater productions, music and dance. This individual will teach two classes in area of expertise, create lighting designs for theatre and dance, and be responsible for the production calendar. MFA required, with at least three years experience teaching at the university level. Experience with international students preferred. Responsibilities for Ethnomusicologist: teach applied lessons on Middle Eastern instruments and/or a Middle Eastern ensemble; other teaching duties will be assigned based on candidates strengths and areas of specialization, but could include courses in Middle-Eastern music studies, string ensemble, music appreciation, survey of non-western music, music theory, and/or music history; Required: established reputation as an ethnomusicologist through publication and performance; record of specialization on the study and the performance of Middle-Eastern music; record of successful teaching at the university level; proven ability to recruit outstanding students. Preferred: doctoral degree or equivalent experience; and commitment to teaching undergraduates in a liberal arts environment. Both new faculty members will contribute to the sustainability, growth, and development of the Performing Arts Program's (Music, Theatre, and Dance) artistic goals; serve on college and/or university-wide committees. Positions contingent upon funding.

Head of the Department of Writing Studies

The Department of Writing Studies (DWS) in the College of Arts and Sciences at the American University of Sharjah (AUS) invites experienced candidates to apply for the position of Head of Department (HoD). We encourage applications from candidates with extensive administration, teaching, and service experience. We are seeking candidates who have an excellent record of teaching diverse students (including L2 students) and relevant research and publications in the field of rhetoric and composition.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • A PhD in Composition and Rhetoric or a closely related field
  • A current rank of assistant professor or higher
  • A record of excellent teaching, research, and service
  • Leadership and administrative experience, preferably in chairing a writing department or program
  • Background in the practice of faculty evaluation and mentoring
  • Experience in curriculum development
  • Interest and background in promoting writing across the curriculum
  • Teaching in the North American liberal arts education system for a minimum of three years
  • Teaching overseas and an awareness of the needs of L2 students
  • Teaching various kinds and levels of composition using a variety of pedagogies (from time-honored rhetorical approaches to the latest developments as practiced in North American universities)

The Department of Writing Studies offers writing courses for more than 1000 students each semester. Faculty Position in the Department of Writing Studies

The Department of Writing Studies invites applications from qualified professionals to teach freshman composition in an international university setting. The department will fill one or more positions this year. We seek both Ph.D. and MA instructors. The Ph.D. instructor will teach a three-course load and have research responsibilities. The MA instructor will teach a four-course load.

Candidates must have at least a master's degree and a minimum of two years of experience in teaching composition at the university or community college level, preferably in North American institutions with a liberal arts emphasis. Candidates must have excellent English proficiency. Areas of expertise and training should include composition, professional writing, or applied linguistics/ESL. Overseas experience will be viewed favorably.

Adjunct Faculty Position in the Department of English

The Department of English at the American University of Sharjah (AUS) seeks applicants for a one or two-semester position as an adjunct faculty member teaching Academic Research Writing, Writing for Engineers, or Business Writing during the 2014-2015 academic year.

Candidates having completed a Ph.D. in English, Rhetoric and Composition, or TESOL/ESP (with experience teaching writing), and currently working in the UAE are encouraged to apply. Applications are invited for the position of Head of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics in the College of Arts and Sciences at the American University of Sharjah (AUS), beginning Fall 2014.
