American University of Sharjah (AUS) is a non-profit, coeducational institution of higher education formed on American models.  

The university is licensed in the United Arab Emirates and incorporated in the state of Delaware in the United States. It is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and by the Ministry of Higher Education in the UAE. All instruction (except languages) is in English, and English is widely spoken throughout the United Arab Emirates.

The university is located 10 miles from the center of Sharjah City and 15 miles from the city of Dubai. The Emirate of Sharjah is situated between the shores of the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman and has beautiful beaches and lovely varied countryside. The architecturally distinctive campus, located on 316 acres, includes nine academic buildings; administration, library and athletic structures; and accommodations for faculty, staff and students. Academic buildings are equipped with state-of-the art science, engineering and language laboratories, digital studios and computer facilities. Currently, AUS has approximately 5,225 students, 351 full-time faculty and over 400 full-time staff.

Visiting Faculty Position in the Department of Biology, Chemistry and Environmental Sciences (BCE)

The Department of Biology, Chemistry and Environmental Sciences (BCE) at the American University of Sharjah invites applications for a one-year visiting position in chemistry for the academic year 2012/13. The position is a replacement for a BCE faculty who will be on sabbatical leave. Candidates are required to have a Ph.D. in chemistry, provide evidence of significant research and excellence in teaching. Strong communication skills in English and experience in American-style liberal arts education are also required.

Visiting Faculty Positions in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the American University of Sharjah invites applications for two one-year visiting positions in mathematics at all ranks for the academic year 2012/13. Applicants with strong research potential in all areas of pure and applied mathematics will be considered.

Candidates are required to have a Ph.D. in mathematics. Evidence of potential in research, excellence in teaching at all levels of the curriculum, and strong communication skills in English, are expected. Experience in American-style higher education is an advantage.

The Department of Mathematics & Statistics at AUS offers an undergraduate major in Mathematics, a minor in Applied and Computational Mathematics, and a minor in Actuarial Mathematics. It provides courses in service to almost every academic program campus-wide. The department currently consists of twenty-eight full time faculty members who are actively engaged in original research in different areas of mathematics and statistics. The teaching load is nine credit hours per semester.

Adjunct Chemistry Lab Instructor (CLI)

The adjunct (part-time) Chemistry Laboratory Instructor (CLI) carries out a variety of laboratory related activities. These include supervision of laboratory sessions which could involve the use of advanced analytical equipment, making pre-laboratory presentations and grading reports and quizzes. The CLI also assists in other departmental tasks as assigned by the laboratory supervisor and the department head.

The successful candidate will have a M.S. degree in chemistry, good communications skills in English, and at least three years of experience in a similar position.

Adjunct Biology Lab Instructor (BLI)

The adjunct (part-time) Biology laboratory Instructor (BLI) carries out a variety of laboratory related activities. The BLI will teach student labs and supervise student laboratory sessions, conduct field and lab experiments, grade reports and quizzes and operate both standard and advanced biology equipment. The BLI will also assist in other departmental tasks as assigned by the laboratory supervisor and the department head.  Preference will be given to applicants with experience in one or more of the following: plant physiology, molecular genetics and ecology.

The successful candidate will have an MS degree in Biology, good communication skills in English and prior experience in a similar position.

Visiting Faculty Position in Physics - Spring 2012

The Department of Physics at the American University of Sharjah invites applications for a one-semester visiting faculty position in physics, to start at the end of January 2012.

Strong candidates from all fields of physics, experimental and theoretical, will be considered. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Physics. Evidence of excellence in teaching, and strong communication skills in the English language, are expected. Experience in American-style higher education is strongly preferred.

Faculty Position of Assistant Professor in Physics

The American University of Sharjah is seeking candidates for the position of assistant professor in Physics (any field of specialty), to begin September 2012. The department is particularly interested in individuals who are well acquainted with the American university system of education, extensive experience in a liberal arts college environment and with demonstrated or potential abilities to deliver excellent teaching for a range of undergraduate physics topics, and conduct research in their areas of expertise. Faculty Position in Mass Communication: Advertising

The Department of Mass Communication (MCM) at the American University of Sharjah (AUS) seeks a full-time faculty member with a background in Advertising and Marketing. Candidates must have a Ph. D. in Advertising or Marketing Communication with extensive experience in advertising and a proven record of scholarly publications. New Ph.D. graduates with industry experience and strong research record will also be considered. Applicants with a master's degree and at least seven years of relevant agency experience are encouraged to apply. Graphic design proficiency and experience in creative advertising will be given special consideration. Preference will be given to applicants with experience at the university level in a liberal arts environment. The faculty member is expected to network with the industry and may have the opportunity to collaborate across schools or departments in the university, i.e. marketing.

Faculty Position in Mass Communication: Broadcast Journalism

The Department of Mass Communication at the American University of Sharjah (AUS), seeks a full-time faculty member in Broadcast Journalism. Candidates must hold a Ph. D. in Mass Communication or a related field and a proven record of scholarly publications. The ideal candidate will teach courses in broadcast and electronic media production, including newsgathering/reporting skills for broadcast, at the university level in a liberal arts environment. Professional experience, preferably in a newsroom setting, and ability to teach courses in production of radio and/or television programs are expected. While a terminal degree is preferred, applicants with a master's degree and at least five years of relevant professional experience in digital/broadcast journalism will be considered. In addition, the ideal applicant is expected to network with the UAE, Middle East and international broadcast organizations as well as play an effective role in the development of a student newsroom center for broadcast/print journalism. The ideal candidate is also expected to participate in developing an interdisciplinary program in Middle Eastern Studies.

The Department of International Studies at AUS invites applications for a full-time faculty position (open rank) in International Relations to start in Fall 2012. We encourage applications from candidates who have expertise in areas such International Law or International Political Economy and an ability to teach additional courses in Middle East studies or Comparative Politics. Visiting Faculty position in Advertising

The department of Mass Communication at the American University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, is seeking applications for a Visiting Faculty position in Marketing Communications. Candidates will have a proven record in teaching theoretical and practical courses in advertising and marketing communications including but not limited to Integrated Marketing Communications, Copy and Layout, Case Studies in Advertising and Principles of Advertising. The ideal candidate will have educational background in marketing communications coupled with industry and teaching experience. Faculty Position in the Department of Arabic and Translation Studies

The Department of Arabic and Translation Studies in the American University of Sharjah invites applications for a faculty position in Arabic Studies at the rank of Assistant professor, beginning in the fall, 2012.

The successful candidate will have a Ph. D. in Arabic studies with special emphasis in classical Arabic literature and/or Arabic linguistics. Native or near-native proficiency in Arabic is required, while being able to teach fluently in English. Experience in teaching Arabic language to native and non-native speakers will be advantages. We are especially interested in candidates with demonstrated experience in a liberal arts college environment. Strong scholarly potential and good teaching record expected. The successful candidate will join a department with an expanding agenda dealing with the teaching of Arabic as a foreign language and international education. As well, the successful candidate will be able to play a role in the development of an interdisciplinary program in Middle Eastern Studies.

Faculty Position in the Department of Writing Studies

The Department of Writing Studies invites applications from qualified professionals to teach freshman composition in an international university setting. The department will fill several positions this year. We seek both Ph.D. and MA instructors. The Ph.D. instructor will teach three courses per semester load and have research responsibilities. The MA instructor will teach four courses per semester.

Candidates must have at least a master's degree and a minimum of two years of experience in teaching composition at the university or community college level, preferably in North American institutions with a liberal arts emphasis. Candidates must have excellent English proficiency. Areas of expertise and training should include composition, professional writing, or applied linguistics/ESL. Overseas experience will be viewed favorably.

Faculty Position in TESOL/English Linguistics with expertise in ESP

The Department of English at the American University of Sharjah seeks a full-time faculty member with a background in TESOL/English Linguistics with expertise in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) to teach courses in Advanced Academic Writing, English for Engineers, and Writing for Business as well as courses in their area of expertise.

Successful candidates will have a Ph.D. in a relevant field and a scholarly publication record. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in teaching non-native English speakers at the university level and teaching in a liberal arts environment. Familiarity with North American higher education is also beneficial.
