Faculty positions for College of Arts and Sciences

American University of Sharjah (AUS) is a non-profit, coeducational institution of higher education formed on American models.  

The university is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and by the Ministry of Higher Education in the UAE. All instruction (except languages) is in English, and English is widely spoken throughout the United Arab Emirates.

The university is located 10 miles from the center of Sharjah City and 15 miles from the city of Dubai. The Emirate of Sharjah is situated between the shores of the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman and has beautiful beaches and lovely varied countryside. The architecturally distinctive campus, located on 316 acres, includes nine academic buildings; administration, library and athletic structures; and accommodations for faculty, staff and students. Academic buildings are equipped with state-of-the art science, engineering and language laboratories, digital studios and computer facilities. Currently, AUS has approximately 5,225 students, 351 full-time faculty and over 400 full-time staff.

Position in Arabic Studies:

The Department of Arabic and Translation Studies in the American University of Sharjah invites applications for faculty positions in Arabic Studies at the rank of Assistant or Associate professor beginning in the Fall 2015. The successful candidates will have Ph. D. in Arabic studies (literary/cultural studies, intellectual history, modern Islam, Arabic histiography, classical literature and literary criticism, or related fields).

A native or near-native proficiency in Arabic and a strong command of English are expected. Strong scholarly record/potential and relevant teaching experience are also expected. The language of instruction at AUS is English. Review of applications will begin immediately.

Applicants should have experience in and/or familiarity with the North American higher educational system, and experience in dealing with cultural and educational needs of a linguistically and culturally diverse student population. The ability to contribute to other courses offered by the Department will be a distinct advantage.

Media Studies Position

The Department of Mass Communication at the American University of Sharjah seeks a full time faculty member in Media Studies beginning Fall 2015. Successful candidates should have a doctoral degree in Mass Communication from an accredited university, and are expected to have an active research agenda in one or more of the following areas: Media History, Media Ethics, or International/Global Communication. Candidates should also have evidence of effective teaching in one or more of the following areas: media law and ethics; intercultural communication; international communication; media theory.

International teaching experience is a plus.

Integrated Marketing Communication Position

The Department of Mass Communication at the American University of Sharjah seeks a full time faculty member in Integrated Marketing Communication beginning Fall 2015. Successful candidates should have a doctoral degree in IMC, Advertising, Public Relations, or related fields from an accredited university, and are expected to have an active research agenda in their area of expertise. Candidates should also have  evidence of effective teaching in IMC and/or related fields.

Visiting Faculty Position in Advanced Academic Writing (One Semester)

The American University of Sharjah, an internationally ranked and accredited American-style university of 6000 students in the United Arab Emirates, seeks a visiting faculty member for a one-semester full-time appointment to teach courses in Advanced Academic Writing and English for Specific Purposes in the Department of English. The Department of English is especially interested in candidates with rich teaching experience and research interests in undergraduate academic writing.

Successful candidates must have a Ph.D. in a relevant field, a record of excellent teaching, active scholarly publication, and a commitment to productive institutional service. Faculty position in Political Science

The Department of International Studies at the American University of Sharjah invites applications for a full-time faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Political Science to start Fall 2015. We encourage applications from candidates who have expertise in International Relations, Security Studies, International Organizations and Public International Law. The successful candidate would be expected to teach introductory courses in political science as well as advanced courses.  The ability to teach an upper-level undergraduate course on American foreign policy or U.S. national security would be a plus. The department seeks candidates who are not only committed to both teaching and research excellence, but who can also contribute to a rich interdisciplinary atmosphere. Faculty position in Physics

The Department of Physics at the American University of Sharjah invites applications for a full time faculty position at the assistant professor rank, to start in August 2015.  Strong candidates from all fields of physics, experimental and theoretical, will be considered. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Physics from a North American institution. Evidence of excellence in teaching, and strong communication skills in the English language, are expected. Experience in the American-style of higher education is strongly preferred.  The deadline to submit an application is November 15, 2014.

Faculty positions in Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the American University of Sharjah invites applications for faculty positions in mathematics at the Assistant or Associate Professor level beginning August 2015. Applicants with strong research potential in all areas of mathematics will be considered. While the area of specialization is open, candidates with research interests in applied mathematics, actuarial mathematics, and statistics are encouraged to apply.

Candidates are required to have a Ph.D. in mathematics or statistics. Evidence of potential in research, excellence in teaching at all levels of the curriculum, and strong communication skills in English, are expected. Experience in American-style higher education is an advantage.

The Department of Mathematics & Statistics at AUS offers a master of science in mathematics, an undergraduate major in mathematics, a minor in applied and computational mathematics, and a minor in actuarial mathematics. It provides courses in service to almost every academic program campus-wide. The department currently consists of twenty-nine full time faculty members who are actively engaged in original research in different areas of mathematics and statistics. The teaching load is nine credit hours per semester.

Faculty position in History

The Department of International Studies at American University of Sharjah seeks a full-time faculty member specialized in the modern history of the Middle East/North Africa. Candidates must be able to teach a range of courses on the history of the modern Middle East/North Africa as well as survey courses in world history.

Successful candidates will have a PhD in Middle Eastern/North African history, a record of excellent teaching, an active research agenda, and a wish to contribute actively to the interdisciplinary atmosphere in the Department of International Studies.

As a university formed on the American model, American University of Sharjah will give priority to candidates who have substantial experience in American models of higher education. Mastery of English is a requirement.

Adjunct Faculty position in the Department of English

The Department of English at the American University of Sharjah (AUS) seeks applicants for a one or two-semester position as an adjunct faculty member teaching Academic Research Writing, Writing for Engineers, or Business Writing during the 2014-2015 academic year.

Candidates having completed a Ph.D. in English, Rhetoric and Composition, or TESOL/ESP (with experience teaching writing), and currently working in the UAE are encouraged to apply.
