Faculty Position in Linguistics/Applied Linguistics

Head of the Department of Arabic and Translation Studies

The Department of Arabic and Translation Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences at the American University of Sharjah (AUS) invites experienced candidates to apply for the Head of Department (HoD) position.  Successful candidates are required to have PhD in Arabic Studies, Islamic Studies, Translation Studies or related fields; current rank of Professor or Associate Professor; experience in American models of higher education; and excellent record in teaching, research, and service.

Preferred Qualifications:

In addition to its heritage, Islamic studies and language courses, the Department of Arabic and Translation Studies at AUS offers a Master of Arts in English/Arabic/English Translation and Interpreting (MATI). The program, which has been accredited by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, prepares our graduates for a variety of exciting careers. The department currently has 16 full time faculty members that are actively engaged in various fields of research.

One-Semester Temporary Position in the Department of Writing Studies

The Department of Writing Studies invites applications for a one-semester temporary position to teach composition at the American University of Sharjah.

Candidates should have a Master's degree in English (Rhetoric and Composition, Applied Linguistics, or related field). In addition, the candidate should have a minimum of three years' experience teaching composition in North American-style higher education institutions. Candidates should have demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching writing.

The teaching load will be four sections of academic writing for Spring 2016 semester.

Theatre: (Assistant Professor or higher rank)

The American University of Sharjah invites applications for the position of Technical Director to begin in August 2016, subject to budgetary approval. Responsibilities: Serve as Technical Director for all program performances including theater productions, music and dance. This individual will teach two to three introductory theatre classes per semester; teaching load is determined by number of program productions being conducted in a given semester. Faculty member will be responsible for production facility maintenance, and serve on college or university-wide committees as requested. Other program duties may be assigned. Terminal degree in Theatre required, with at least three years experience teaching at the university level and Technical Director experience preferred. Experience with international students also preferred.  Willingness to contribute to work cooperatively as a core member of a young and exciting Performing Arts Program a must. Psychology Adjunct

The Department of International Studies at the American University of Sharjah is seeking an adjunct instructor to teach general psychology courses. Applicants must have at least a Master's Degree [plus teaching experience] in Psychology or related fields at the time of appointment. Preference will be given to candidates who have strong teaching credentials, laboratory experience, and strong organizational skills. The teaching load is two courses per semester, including at least one session of Introduction to Psychology. Faculty Position in TESL-Composition / Second Language Writing

Faculty Position in Transnational/Comparative Literatures

Faculty position in Transnational/Comparative Literatures to teach program courses in literature, general education, and critical writing in the Department of English.  The Department of English is especially interested in candidates who have a secondary focus in Middle Eastern literatures.

Faculty Position in Early Modern British Literature

Faculty position in Early Modern (c.1500-c.1800) British Literature to teach courses in Early Modern British literature, Writing  for Academic Purposes, and other General Education courses, in the Department of English.  The Department of English is especially interested in candidates demonstrating a secondary interest in film, gender or cultural studies.

Successful candidates will have a completed Ph.D. in a relevant field, a strong record of excellence in teaching and ongoing scholarly publication, and a demonstrated commitment to productive institutional service. Faculty Position in Arabic Studies

The Department of Arabic and Translation Studies in the American University of Sharjah invites applications for a faculty position in Arabic Studies at the rank of Assistant or Associate professor beginning in the Fall 2016, subject to budgetary approval.  A Ph.D. is required in Arabic studies with a focus on classical Arabic literature The ability to teach entry level Arabic heritage courses is essential. The successful candidate will have a native or near-native proficiency in Arabic, while being able to teach in English. The language of instruction at AUS is English, however, candidates able to teach courses in both Arabic and English are preferred.  Strong scholarly record/potential and relevant teaching experience are expected.

Applicants should have experience in and/or familiarity with the North American higher educational system, and experience in dealing with cultural and educational needs of a linguistically and culturally diverse student population. The ability to contribute to other courses offered by the Department will be a distinct advantage.

Faculty positions in Mathematics and Statistics

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the American University of Sharjah invites applications for faculty positions in mathematics and statistics at the Assistant or Associate Professor level beginning August 2016, subject to budgetary approval. Applicants from all areas of mathematics and statistics will be considered.

Candidates are required to have a Ph.D. in mathematics or statistics. Evidence of strong potential in research, excellence in teaching at all levels of the curriculum and strong communication skills in English are expected. Experience in American-style higher education is an advantage.

The Department of Mathematics & Statistics at AUS offers a master of science in mathematics, an undergraduate degree in mathematics, a minor in applied and computational mathematics, and a minor in actuarial mathematics. It provides courses in service to almost every academic program campus-wide. The department currently consists of 28 full time faculty members who are actively engaged in original research in different areas of mathematics and statistics. Position in Mass Communication

The Department of Mass Communication at the American University of Sharjah seeks a full time faculty member at the rank of assistant or associate professor in mass communication and with a professional background in emerging media practices, such as digital non-fiction storytelling and/or multimedia journalism, beginning in Fall 2016. Preferred candidates must hold a doctoral degree in mass communication, or a related field with a dissertation topic focused on mass communication, from an accredited university, and are expected to conduct research in their area of expertise. Candidates will be expected to teach and design courses in the department's journalism concentration as well as across the discipline.

Assistant Professor (or higher rank) of Music

The American University of Sharjah Performing Arts Program invites applications for a position in Music. Responsibilities include: Teaching three classes per semester for undergraduate students, including class piano, sight singing, and applied lessons (voice/piano preferred), conduct scholarly and applied research, and engage in service-related activities. Other teaching responsibilities will be assigned based on background and departmental needs, but could include courses in music history. Required: Established reputation as a performer through publication and/or performance, record of successful teaching at the university level, and demonstrate a commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Faculty Position in History

The Department of International Studies at the American University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates seeks a full-time faculty member specialized in the modern history of South Asia or sub-Saharan Africa . A sub-field in East Asian history is an advantage. Candidates must be able to teach a range of courses in their field of specialization as well as survey courses in world history and an upper division course on imperialism.

Successful candidates will have a Ph.D. in the relevant field, a record of excellent teaching, an active research agenda, and a wish to contribute actively to the interdisciplinary atmosphere in the Department of International Studies.

Adjunct Faculty Position in the Department of English

The Department of English at the American University of Sharjah (AUS) seeks applicants for a one-semester position as an adjunct faculty to teach Advanced Academic Research Writing, Writing for Engineers, and/or Business Writing during the (AUS) Fall semester 2015 (possibly renewable depending on student interest and funding).
