Faculty positions for College of Arts and Sciences

Position in Arabic Studies

The Department of Arabic and Translation Studies in the American University of Sharjah invites applications for a faculty position in Arabic Studies at the rank of Assistant or Associate professor beginning in the Fall 2015.  A Ph.D. is required in Arabic studies with a focus on the classical age and preferably in Arabic literature, Islamic studies or a related field.  The ability to teach entry level Arabic heritage courses is essential. The successful candidate will have a native or near-native proficiency in Arabic, while being able to teach in English. The language of instruction at AUS is English, however, candidates able to teach courses in both Arabic and English are preferred.  Strong scholarly record/potential and relevant teaching experience are expected.

Applicants should have experience in and/or familiarity with the North American higher educational system, and experience in dealing with cultural and educational needs of a linguistically and culturally diverse student population. The ability to contribute to other courses offered by the Department will be a distinct advantage.

Head of the Department of Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences

The Department of Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences at the American University of Sharjah (AUS) invites experienced candidates to apply for the Head of Department (HoD) position. 

Qualifications and Experience

  • A PhD in Biology, Chemistry, or Environmental Sciences
  • A current rank of Professor or Associate Professor
  • Experience in North American higher education institution(s)
  • An excellent record in teaching, research, and service
  • Leadership and administrative experience in multi-disciplinary programs
  • Background in the process of faculty evaluation and mentoring
  • Interest and background in promoting research
  • Experience in program accreditation and curriculum development
  • A vision for the future development of the department that is consistent with the mission and strategic plan of the college and university.

The Department of Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences at AUS offers a Bachelor of Science in Biology, a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences.  Our programs, which have been accredited by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, prepare our graduates for a variety of exciting careers. The department currently has 16 full time faculty members and 10 Lab staff that are actively engaged in various fields of research.

Visiting Faculty Position in Biology

The American University of Sharjah (www.aus.edu) seeks a PhD in Microbiology or microbiology-related field to fill a visiting faculty position in the Department of Biology, Chemistry and Environmental Sciences (BCE). The appointment is for the academic year 2015-2016 but may be extended by mutual agreement. The successful candidate will be required to instruct microbiology, introductory biology courses and advanced courses related to the candidate's area of expertise. Position is contingent upon budgetary approval.

The successful candidate will have:

  • A PhD in Microbiology or Biology (with microbiology focus)
  • An established record of excellence in teaching, research and service
  • Experience in North American higher education

BCE offers BS degrees in Biology, Chemistry and Environmental Sciences and minors in Biology, Environmental Sciences and Environmental Policy. BCE currently has 14 full time faculty members actively engaged in research in diverse areas within the three disciplines.
