CVE students win first ever concrete canoe competition

A team of students from the Department of Civil Engineering (CVE) won the first ever Concrete Canoe Competition 2005 in April.

Competing against seven teams from seven teams from four other UAE universities and colleges, the AUS team won top honors in both categories of the event (sprinting and endurance).

Organized by the Abu Dhabi Men's College, the event was held at Hiltonia Beach in Abu Dhabi.

Civil engineering students Ayman Al-Hamady, Rawad Al-Haj Ali, Milad Meraji, Mattar Al-Kaabi and Alireza Masoumi comprised the triumphant AUS team, which won the AED 5,000 first prize.

Dr. Sami Tabsh (Structures), Dr. Adil Tamimi (Materials) and Dr. Sameh El-Sayegh (Management) were the team's faculty advisors.

Student chapters of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) in prominent institutions in the US date their concrete canoe races back to the 1960s.

The contest's scoring is based on engineering design and construction principals used, report presentation and oratory skills, and performance of the canoe and the paddlers in different race events. The ASCE chapter at AUS helped organize the event.
