Dubai Courts representative discusses Emirati women’s rights

The Department of English, in conjunction with the Office of Public Affairs, presented the lecture "Emirati Women's Rights: Theory and Practice" by Dr. Abdelaziz Mohamed Al Hammadi, head of the  Family Cases Division at Dubai Courts on December 12. The talk was a part of a series of talks by the Sharjah Government Social Services Department.

Dr. Hammadi identified and discussed three important aspects related to Emirati women's rights-the religious, the social and the legal-and looked at the development of women's rights before and after Islam, especially in the early period. He reviewed the status quo in the light of the Beijing Platform for Action, 1995, and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), adopted in 1979 by the UN General Assembly.

He also examined the items related to women in the Personal Status Code adopted in 2005 in the United Arab Emirates.
