Study Abroad/Visiting Students

I. AUS Students Only
AUS students are not allowed to take courses at other institutions with in the UAE. An enrolled student who plans to take courses at another college or university to transfer credit to AUS (in summer only) must obtain prior approval from his or her dean. Failure to do so will result in no credit being awarded for the transfer work. The host institution must be recognized by the ministry of education of the country and/or accredited and must provide learning experiences similar to those offered by AUS.

Study at American University, Washington, DC
AUS also offers students the opportunity to study abroad at American University of Washington, DC, and gain full AUS course credit.

II. Study Abroad and Exchange Students from Other Universities
Students from a university that has a formal exchange agreement with AUS may study at AUS for a semester or a full academic year. Students must first apply through the study abroad office at their home institution. Once approved by the home institution, the student must complete the following form and mail it to the Office of the Registrar at AUS.

III. Visiting Students
A visiting student is one who is not formally admitted to the American University of Sharjah but is allowed to take courses at AUS for transfer back to his/her home institution. Applicants seeking visiting student status must submit a visiting student application (available from the Office of the Registrar), an official university transcript and a letter of good standing to the Office of the Registrar. A TOEFL score is required [except for students studying in a four-year university (English medium) in North America]. If the application is approved, registration is completed through the Office of the Registrar pending available seats. Normally, a student is not allowed to register as a visiting student for more than one academic year. Visiting students should check with their home institutions about the transferability of AUS credits to their programs.

IV. Transient Students
Transient student status covers three groups of people:

  • Those who have obtained their undergraduate or graduate degrees from AUS and come back to take extra course(s).
  • Those who hold degrees from universities other than AUS who want to take course(s) not toward a degree.
  • AUS faculty/staff and spouses of faculty/staff who want to take course(s) for reasons other than seeking a degree.

One can be a transient student for not more than one academic year.
