James E. Gannon, PhD

From the faculty and staff, we welcome you to the Department of Biology, Chemistry and Environmental Sciences at American University of Sharjah, one of the leading universities in the Middle East.

The department has a North American student-centric vision organized around strong foundations in science and training that prepares students for today’s job market and graduate study. We work hard to provide a highly diverse and nourishing environment that promotes learning. Mentored by 15 highly trained faculty members, 14 lab instructors and lab specialists, undergraduate students can pursue basic and applied research in many areas of biology, chemistry/biochemistry, and environmental science. The department faculty and their students work with local industry and government agencies on projects of regional interest providing students with the hands-on training needed to be successful when they graduate. Our extensive and modern facilities are available to students in structured laboratory as well as independent research settings. Faculty members in the department publish in and serve as editors of major scientific journals and often, students are co-authors on peer-reviewed scientific articles. Many faculty continually earn recognition in their areas of expertise. Thank you for visiting our website and, if you choose to join us, we promise to do our best to ensure your success.

Sincerely,

James E. Gannon, PhD

The solid education and research experience I have gained during my studies at AUS made me a competitive candidate for graduate studies immediately after graduation. The fact that professors at AUS are highly qualified, very approachable and always willing to push students to their fullest potential makes a big difference to the student experience in this department. I believe my time at AUS has formed a major part of my academic journey and allowed me to discover my passion for biomedical research. Soon after graduating, I  completed my master's degree in biological and biomedical sciences at Hamad Bin Khalifa University in Qatar. I am currently pursuing a PhD in Neuroscience with a focus on neurodegenerative diseases, at the same university.

The years we attend university are integral for our development as adults and professionals in our field of choice. American University of Sharjah provides a diverse and complete syllabus for the sciences, exposing students to different areas and allowing them to discover what their specific interests are. Overall, being a biology student at AUS demands hard work and dedication. This academic experience ultimately prepared me for my master's degree in integrative neuroscience at the University of Edinburgh, as well as for currently pursuing a PhD in Neurology at University College of London.

The Department of Biology, Chemistry and Environmental Science at AUS provided me with an excellent opportunity to study multiple disciplines of chemistry in a setting that encouraged undergraduate research. As an undergraduate, the curriculum and facilities helped prepare me to pursue a graduate degree and put me on equal ground with students from top universities around the world.  The professors always went the extra mile for their dedication to make sure students received the best education and hands-on experience possible.

AUS challenged me and definitely helped prepare me for graduate school in the United States. The events and field trips conducted by the professors were memorable and turned our cohort into close friends.

When I was looking at potential schools for my Doctor of Pharmacy degree, I looked for the kinds of students that graduated from the school rather than the kind that the school took in. When I measure success in an institution or program, I look at the impact the graduates of that school have on society. I’m very proud to say that American University of Sharjah has one of the most impactful class of graduates in the region each year. Furthermore, the Department of Biology, Chemistry and Environmental Sciences at AUS tailors education to meet the needs of all students regardless of their academic background and creates competitive candidates for graduate schools as well as industry.
