Department head's message

Our curriculum is designed to train and educate civil engineering students to face today’s world from the perspective of a leader, an innovator, an entrepreneur and, more importantly, a builder of civilization for the generations to come.
Dr. Irtishad Ahmad

Greetings! Welcome to the Department of Civil Engineering at American University of Sharjah (AUS).

The department is committed to excel as the preeminent center for advancement and dissemination of knowledge in all aspects of civil engineering. Our motivated students, highly qualified faculty, dedicated alumni and partners in the industry work together to make the program one of the finest in the region and beyond.

Civil engineers help define, and build, the future of civilization. It is a challenging and demanding profession—and even more so in this age of technology. At the same time, challenges offer opportunities, too! The profession of civil engineering is no exception.

Today’s civil engineers must learn how to strike a balance between the need to change and the need to conserve, between effectiveness and productivity, between tradition and modernity, and between growth and sustainability.

There is a greater need to build sustainable and resilient infrastructures, and to design and construct accessible and manageable facilities to provide comfort, security and affordability.

Civil engineers today must learn how to meet these challenges and demands. At AUS, our curriculum is designed to train and educate civil engineering students not to become just technologists, but to face today’s world from the perspective of a leader, an innovator, an entrepreneur and, more importantly, a builder of civilization for the generations to come. We invite all our current and prospective students to embark upon and enjoy this exciting journey to the future of civilization!

In addition to learning in classrooms and laboratories equipped with modern amenities and technologies, civil engineering students at AUS enjoy opportunities to participate in many extracurricular activities, and to learn from interactions with the faculty members and, equally importantly, from each other.

Our undergraduate students get very high-quality, hands-on training and instruction in all areas of civil engineering: structural, geotechnical, environmental, transportation and construction. Graduate students take courses in advanced topics and participate in research with our faculty members. Upon graduation, students enjoy excellent employment opportunities, as the training and education they receive here at AUS is greatly valued by the employers in all sectors of the civil engineering profession.
