Visual Communication
In addition to the core design classes, the visual communication major offers specialized classes in design topics such as illustration, printmaking, advanced photography and publication design for print and digital media. Our graduates are working in creative positions in the publishing, advertising and media industries, as art directors, producers, design directors and account executives. Other graduates have gone on to teaching positions at respected schools in the region.
Graduates from the visual communication program should be equipped with the skills, knowledge and confidence to contribute to:
- work in a design company as a creative designer involved in problem finding and problem solving visual solutions
(logo, corporate identity, poster, information graphics, brochures, book design)
- work in an advertising company as a visualizer/graphic designer in their creative departments
(advertisements, corporate identity, promotions, graphic presentations)
- work in an in-house design department of a company (e.g., government/public sector) as a graphic designer/art director/design coordinator/publicity and promotion design
(company communications, information graphics, corporate identity)
- work as freelance designers for individuals/organizations requiring specialist graphic design solutions/image and concept generation
Graduates should also have a working knowledge of the following and may have concentrated in one of the following specialist areas:
- illustration
- photography
- printmaking
- image making
- time-based media
- Web designing
- typography
Graduates have a portfolio of their work that will demonstrate the particular skills, preferences and knowledge related to visual communications as a practice.
