Mass Communication - Faculty Bios

Dr. Joseph Gibbs

Associate Professor Joseph Gibbs received his doctorate from the University Professors Program of Boston University in 1994. As a reporter and editor on several Massachusetts newspapers, he won awards in spot news, editorial, and headline-writing categories. His books Gorbachev’s Glasnost (Texas A&M, 1999); Three Years in the Bloody Eleventh (Penn State, 2002); and Dead Men Tell No Tales (University of South Carolina, 2007) earned critical praise.

Outside of newspapers, Gibbs’ articles and book reviews have appeared in periodicals such as Naval History, Naval War College Review, Media History, Perspective, Political Science Quarterly, Strategic Review, Western Pennsylvania History, the Dubai-based art magazine Soura and the bilingual (Arabic-English) Journal of Social Affairs. His conference presentations include recent talks at the annual joint meeting of the North American Society for Oceanic History and the National Maritime Historical Society; and at a joint session of the Association of Mid-Atlantic Civil War Round Tables (AMART) and the Civil War and Emancipation Studies Forum of Temple University’s Center for the Humanities (CWEST).

At AUS he chaired the committee which secured full UAE accreditation for the Department of Mass Communication in 2004; he served a stint as interim chair in Summer/Fall 2007. His AUS journalism students and alumni have worked for or interned at media organizations such as the Associated Press, Al Arabiya, Al Jazeera, CBC, Dubai One/Emirates News, the Frankfurter Allgemeine, the Kuwait Times, LBC, MBC, MSNBC, Reuters, the Toronto Star, the Amman, Jordan-based Star, and Dubai-area periodicals such as Campus Journal, Capital Talk, Communicate, Emirates Business 24/7, Emirates Evening Post, Emirates Today, Gulf Marketing Review, Gulf News, Gulf Today, Khaleej Times, Soura, Students’ Gazette, Trends and Xpress.
