CEN Outreach Hub

Students in AUS College of Engineering (CEN) are required to do an internship as a graduation requirement. Students who are taking more than 7 credit hours during the fall and spring academic semesters are not allowed to take the internship course. Moreover, students who are taking a course during the summer term are not allowed to register for the internship course. Eligible students can do their internships during the summer break, starting from May 28, 2024 to August 22, 2024.

To ensure mutually beneficial outcomes from the internship, we encourage employers to share with us a detailed job description. The recruitment process is based on the steps below:

• College of Engineering receives the request and internship description from the company.
• The opportunity is shared with the students through the university's career portal.
• Students can find the available job opportunities through the www.aus.edu/careerportal portal. CEN can also help identify students for these opportunities.
• The company conducts interviews with the students if necessary.
• The company updates the college with the selected students.

The students are required to work physically on the employer’s site or virtually online. 
The company that provides an internship opportunity must have an official trade license in the country that it is operating in. In special circumstances, opportunities from startup companies could be accommodated.

As much as possible the internship should provide:

• exposure to the overall professional experience
• an opportunity for interns to apply what they have learned in their university education

Technical Competencies

The following internship outcomes are expected for students in computer science and engineering:

• develop an understanding of engineering practices and interpersonal skills by interacting with supervisors and colleagues
• apply knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering to solve assigned problems in the workplace
• learn independently and appreciate the value of continuous learning
• use available company resources to understand technical, economic, environmental and safety information related to the company
• observe and practice professional ethics
• write a professional report

Behavioral Competencies

The following behavioral competencies (i.e. soft skills) should be developed:

• teamwork
• multicultural and interpersonal skills
• presentation skills
• project management skills
• communication skills

• The company should assign a specific supervisor for the interns. The role of the supervisor is to ensure the assigned tasks are fully achieved and provide guidance to the students.
• Students are requested to keep a daily log.
• Students will have to submit a weekly journal.
• It is recommended that a specific supervisor meets with the intern on a daily basis to ensure that the intern is engaged and has a daily plan.
• Where possible, interns should be present in departmental meetings so that they gain exposure to the professional work culture and the sharing of ideas.
• Interns can submit their ideas and suggestions after the meetings to their supervisors.

• In addition to a thorough orientation of the department, and overall organization, interns will need a technical orientation on the tools that are used for holding meetings and sharing and collaborating on documents.
• The intern and faculty supervisor will set objectives for the program of work to be carried out during the internship, and the intern will submit a final report to the faculty supervisor.

At the end of the internship placement of the student, the College of Engineering will share a specific form for evaluating the student. The supervisor is requested to submit a final evaluation report on the technical and behavioral aspects of the interns.

Dubai Police Academy

Dubai Police College was established in 1987 by virtue of Law No. (1) of 1987. The study officially started on September 19, 1987, starting from the Police Training School of Emergency Department at that time until the completion of the Academy building in its current form. The basic infrastructure of the College was completed in October 1988 upon issuance of Resolution No. (1) of 1988 Regarding the By law of Police College, and the College was officially inaugurated on April 1, 1989. The College name was changed to Academy on 13/12/2001.

The Agreement:

Under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed as part of the university’s College of Engineering’s (CEN) Al Nukhba Program, the Dubai Police Academy commits to providing internships annually for four AUS students, which is an integral part of their graduation requirements, enriching their educational journey with practical, real-world experience. The Dubai Police Academy will be training AUS UAE national students, contributing significantly to the cultivation of local engineering talent.

The Agreement:

The collaboration, which operates within the framework of the AUS Engineering Al Nukhba (Elite) Program, will see Waseela supporting the training of AUS students through internships, providing invaluable hands-on experience to complement academic learning and meet graduation requirements. AUS students will gain access to IoT development kits and dashboards provided by Waseela, empowering them to explore, experiment and innovate solutions leveraging the latest technologies, in a testament to its dedication to nurturing student talent and driving innovation.

Two visionary gentlemen who, having worked in various capacities with top technology vendors as well as the channel, realized that there existed gaps in the “value-added” distribution landscape that could be filled by adopting a holistic approach to IT Security Distribution business.

StarLink was thus born, filling these gaps with ‘TRUE VALUE’ and LINKING the various stakeholders of the burgeoning value chain within the tech industry in the region.

The Agreement:

The MOA, which operates within the framework of the AUS Engineering Al Nukhba (elite) Program, outlines an approach to cooperation between CEN and Starlink. Among its provisions, Starlink pledges to offer annual internships to AUS students, enriching their educational journey with practical experience integral to their graduation requirements. Both parties will jointly supervise selected capstone and research projects, leveraging their expertise to steer students towards impactful research outcomes.

Sharjah National Oil Corporation (SNOC) is government-owned and is the oil and gas industry executive arm of the Emirate, under the auspices of the Petroleum Council of Sharjah. Established in October 2010, SNOC owns and manages Sharjah concession oil and gas assets and is the main supplier of gas in Sharjah. SNOC is developing a diversified energy portfolio. Besides its exploration activities in collaboration with international petroleum entities such as Eni and PTTEP, SNOC has initiated a strategic underground gas storage project. With its declared commitment of Net-Zero by 2032, SNOC has other several initiatives, including renewables, and CCS research.

The Agreement:

Under the agreement, which operates within the framework of the AUS Engineering Al Nukhba (elite) Program, SNOC will support the training of AUS students through internships required for graduation, providing them with hands-on experience to complement their academic studies and practical understanding of the oil and gas industry. This collaboration will also see SNOC and AUS jointly supervise select student capstone projects, fostering innovation and practical problem-solving skills among students.

The Agreement:

Hikvision will play a fundamental role in supporting AUS through diverse avenues. This includes providing specialized devices and resources to enhance the learning experience and capacity-building of AUS students, as well as sharing of expertise in critical areas. Hikvision will also offer internships to two CEN students annually. The agreement also calls for jointly supervising capstone and research projects, organizing enlightening field trips to Hikvision's exhibition and research centers, and promoting the exchange of knowledge through invited speakers.

The agreement will also allow for an exchange of knowledge and expertise between CEN’s world-class faculty and Schneider Electric by giving access to AUS students and faculty to Schneider Electric’s Energy University and Schneider Electric Academy Resources.

Chemical and Biological Engineering High School Competition (May 2024)

Problem Statement:

Heat exchangers are an integral part of the several processes in chemical and biological engineering. A heat exchanger, in general, is a device that is employed to transfer thermal energy between two materials such as two liquids or a solid and a liquid. In this competition, students are required to design and construct a small heat exchanger that is able to efficiently transfer heat between equal amounts of ice-cold water and room-temperature water. Students must ensure that the exchanger is compact, simple to use, and minimizes heat exchange with the surroundings. Also, students must utilize low-cost, natural, recyclable, and/or ordinary materials of their own choice to build the heat exchanger. The heat exchanger must be highly effective in cooling down the room-temperature water.

Groups: Maximum 4 students per group from the same school. Multiple groups from the same school are allowed. Competition rules and judging criteria to be announced after the registration deadline is closed.

How are Integrated Circuit Chips Made? (May 2024)

Venue: American University of Sharjah Campus

This workshop introduces the basic principle behind making integrated circuits, commonly called chips. The workshop will look into the fabrication process, step by step.
