Department and Faculty News
- Electrical Engineering Professor, Dr. Mourad Barkat, has been named as an IEEE Fellow. This tremendous honor from IEEE, the world’s leading professional association for the advancement of technology, reflects the high caliber of AUS faculty members and their constant pursuit of excellence.
- Dr. Nasser Qaddoumi, Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering, has received the best paper award at the Fourth IEEE GCC Conference held in Bahrain in November 2007.
- Dr. Hasan Al-Nashash, Electrical Engineering Professor, was awarded a US patent in collaboration with the biomedical engineering department at Johns Hopkins University.
- Dr. Khaled Assaleh, Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering, was invited as a keynote speaker at the 2007 International Symposium on Computers and the Arabic Language held in Riyadh (SA)
- New faculty join the ELE department

- Ibrahim Jarrar, electrical engineering senior student, won the third place in the Education Week project competition hosted by The International Petroleum Technology Conference (IPTC) held in Dubai from the 4th to 7th of December, 2007.
The International Petroleum Technology Conference hosted an “Education Week” for the benefit of the best final-year undergraduate students in science, geoscience and engineering from qualified institutions across the Eastern Hemisphere. From over 120 nominations received, 80 of the best students from across 27 countries and representing 40 institutions have been selected to participate in the Education Week at IPTC.
- Education Week sponsoring companies include: Baker Hughes, BP, ENI S.p.A., Halliburton, PETRONAS, RasGas Co. Ltd., Shell, Total S.A., Petroleum Development Oman, Schlumberger

- Two of the ELE department recent graduates won two graduate awards in Canada. Akram Bin Sediq (BSEE 05) won the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) 2007-2008 for international students. The OGS is a prestigious award which is designed to encourage excellence in graduate studies at the master’s and doctoral levels. Only 60 OGS awards were given to international students, from all majors, in the entire province of Ontario. Mustafa Fanaswala (BSEE 06) won the 2007-2008 Ontario Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology (OGSST) award. The award is designed to encourage excellence in graduate studies in science and technology. The award is supported by the government of the Ontario and given to the best incoming students at the graduate level.
Both Akram and Mustafa are studying for their Master degree at Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada.
- ELE recent graduates, Mohammed El-Jaber and Mohammad Abdul Manan, have won the third-place in the international award “2007 IEEE MYRON ZUCKER INDUSTRY APPLICATIONS UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT DESIGN WARDS" for their design project work in the area of "A Novel Biometric via Hand Structure Using Near-field Microwave Imaging". The first and second places were won by students from University of Missouri-Rolla and University of Toronto respectively. The students were supervised by Dr. Khaled Assaleh and Dr. Nasser Qaddoumi

Forum on Electronic Engineering Education

American University of Sharjah - UAE
The Forum on Electronic Engineering Education was held at the American university of Sharjah on March 22, 08. It provided a venue for academics and engineers from industry, engaged in teaching, research and development in the area of electronics and related areas to convene, interact and share experiences. Over 50 participants from 10 universities and industrial establishments in UAE examined the current practices in undergraduate electronics course syllabi development and compared that to leading international universities. They have also explored the necessary lab facilities and EDA tools required to satisfy the syllabi and industry expectations and share some of the latest teaching methodologies. The forum has also provided an opportunity to strengthen the links between universities and industry. An exhibition was also organized with 9 participating companies.
