Dr. Nadia Al Hasani
(Architecture)
presented two papers at the 35th Annual Popular Culture Association meeting and the 27th American Culture Association held jointly in San Diego March 23–26. The first paper was entitled “Abstracting Authenticity— Fusing Imagery,” and the second was entitled “In the Name of Globalization: Popularizing Distant Cultures.” She also presented the paper “Building on the Edge: Diversity through Self and Other” at the Eighth Sharjah Urban Planning Symposium held April 3–5 and the paper “One Size Cannot Fit All: Redesigning School Architecture” at the Fourth Annual GCC Forum for Ministries of Education School held in Dubai May 9–11. She chaired a session on sustainability and urbanization at the First International Conference on Green Buildings: Future in the UAE held in Dubai May 2–3, organized by the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, as well as a session in the Architecture and Real Estate Development in the UAE Symposium held in Dubai on March 21, organized by Ajman University.
Dr. Jeremy Bendik-Keymer
(International Studies)
gave a talk at the conference Urban Children and Youth in the MENA Region: Assessing Priorities in Education in Dubai May 16–18. The conference was organized by the Dubai Municipality, the World Bank and by the Arab Urban Development Institute. It is part three in a three-part series of UNESCO and World Bank conferences held globally since 2004 on education and the city. Dr. Bendik-Keymer's research, “School-Family Relationships: An Argument for the Parallel Process Model,” was selected for the conference papers background volume. His paper “Empowering Children's Capability through Community Schooling” will be presented at the Fifth International Conference on the Capability Approach to take place in Paris at UNESCO September 11–14. His paper “Urban Sustainability: An Analytic Clarification” will be given at Gulf First Urban Planning and Development Conference in Kuwait, December 12–14.
Dr. Judith Caesar
(Language and Literature)
presented the paper “American Spaces in the Fiction of Jhumpa Lahiri” at the College English Association Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, on April 1. The same paper will appear in the forthcoming issue of English Studies in Canada. Her article “Animal Imagery in Wuthering Heights” will appear in the forthcoming issue of The Explicator.
W. Eirik Heintz
(Architecture and Foundations)
presented his paper, “Inserting a Design Culture into a Multicultural Environment” at the 21st National Conference on the Beginning Design Student at the University of Texas-San Antonio held February 24–26. An anonymous peer review of abstracts resulted in 62 of 185 proposals for papers being accepted for presentation and publication in the proceedings. The paper examined learning impediments that these students face at the beginning of their design education and proposed methods of instruction that build upon the established multicultural environment to create a design culture. Included in the paper were the results of an extensive student survey that was given to Foundations students in Fall Semester 2004.
Dr. Nada Mourtada-Sabbah
(International Studies)
was an invited speaker at the conference “Bridging the Gap: A Forum on the Crisis in Arab- American Relations” held April 26 by Georgetown University at the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies (CCAS) in Washington, D.C. The paper, entitled “From Mere Tolerance Towards Full Partnership” will appear as a special contribution in the CCAS Occasional Papers. Following the conference, Dr. Mourtada-Sabbah was invited to attend a seminar by former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, the Mortara Distinguished Professor of Diplomacy at Georgetown University. On March 30, Dr. Mourtada-Sabbah led a group of international studies students to participate in the international conference “Iraq and Its Neighboring States: Reciprocal Views” organized by the Gulf Research Center under the aegis of His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi. She has also been invited to participate in the workshop “War on Terror, War on Iraq and Presidential Powers” at the Institut Français de Relations Internationales in Paris. The workshop, which brings together some of the main French public law specialists, will be held on June 16 at the French Center on the United States in Paris. Also, Dr. Mourtada-Sabbah has been appointed Faculty Fellow at the Department of Government in the School of Public Affairs at American University, Washington, DC, from June 1 to August 20. Dr. Mourtada is also working on a book entitled The War Powers of the U.S. President: Constitutional Controversies.
Dr. Lawrence T. Woods
(International Studies)
presented a paper on teaching interdisciplinarity and interfaith dialogue at AUS during the conference Africa and Globalization for the Common Good in Kericho, Kenya, April 20–24. The conference produced the Kericho Declaration on Globalization, which is now being circulated for signatures worldwide.
