IS students prepare to visit White House, US Congress

Thirty students from the Department of International Studies (IS) are gearing up for an exciting, multipurpose study tour of Washington, DC, in Novemeber.

The trip, which is being undertaken by students of the POL 306 American Government course, will include an educational tour of major institutions such as the US Supreme Court, the US Congress, the Library of Congress, the White House, the Woodrow Wilson Centre as well as other institutions, relayed Associate Professor Dr. Nada Mourtada-Sabbah, course instructor and department chair.

Sponsored by the Gulf Research Center and Gargash Enterprises, who covered the full cost of this educational project, the trip will also allow students to meet senior US officials, as well as faculty and students at the American University and Georgetown Universityʼs Center for Contemporary Arab Studies (CCAS) during their visit to the US capital.

Not only does this trip complete an educational requirement for the students of the American Government class but it also provides them with an opportunity to represent AUS at the annual meeting of the Middle East Studies Association. Along with Dr. Cook and Dr. Mourtada-Sabbah, Dr. Moza Al Shehhi, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs; Dr. Pia Anderson, Assistant Professor, IS; and Isa Blumi, Assistant Professor, IS; will accompany the students. The students will also have a brief stopover in Paris, where they will attend a lecture on American Foreign Policy from a French perspective.
