Survey Results

During Spring 2003, three comprehensive surveys were conducted. The surveys were distributed to students, faculty and staff to get a broad-based assessment of perceptions from all three constituencies.

The three surveys were circulated and collected about two weeks apart during the spring semester 2003. The responses to the surveys were entered into data files and basic analysis was performed by a faculty volunteer and the Office of Institutional Research.

Because of the assessment value of these surveys AUS plans to re-survey periodically. Appropriate modifications will be made to the instruments and a larger sample of students will be used.

Faculty Survey

A single comprehensive faculty survey instrument was developed by the Self-Study Steering Committee, the Office of Finance and Administration and the Faculty Senate.

In responding to 363 statements, faculty members were given a five-point scale typically consisting of: strongly agree, agree, disagree, strongly disagree, and not applicable/not sure. Faculty could also provide open-ended input. Simple demographic items were collected to aid in group analysis of the results. The surveys were administered through the academic deans' offices. Faculty members were asked to complete the questionnaires within a week and return them anonymously to their dean's office. Of the 190 faculty on campus in spring 2003, 150 forms were returned, for a response rate of 79%.

Staff and Student Surveys

Surveys were developed by the self-study survey subcommittee to seek information needed from staff and students.

The staff survey was distributed to all staff above level 3 on the Human Resources position grade chart. Employees below level 3 were not included in the survey because the general English language proficiency of those at these levels was deemed insufficient to adequately address the issues. Each survey included an envelope in which to return the survey anonymously, either through campus mail or by directly depositing it in a drop box in the post office. Of the 350 staff questionnaires distributed, 234 were returned, for a response rate of 67%.

The student surveys were distributed in a number of ways and as a result the sample was not a random sample. One hundred forms were given to each of the four schools/college with directions for them to select and distribute to students in any manner. In addition, the Student Council was given 100 forms and asked to solicit responses. Of the 500 surveys distributed, a total of 381 were returned, representing 76% of the approximately 3,000 undergraduate students.
