Research Projects in Power and Energy

CEN  >  Departments  >  Electrical Engineering  >  Research  >  Research Projects in Power and Energy

1. Partial discharge (PD) monitoring of power transformers

Power transformers are vital elements to the integrity of power system. Sudden failure of power transformers can be very costly to the utility and hence close monitoring to their conditions is a must. One of the main causes of transformer failures is the occurrence of partial discharge (PD). In this research, different aspects related to PD monitoring of power transformers are investigated. This includes the development of RF antenna, modern algorithm for PD denoising, artificial intelligent techniques for PD type identification and estimation techniques for PD localization.

Collaborators: Dr. Ayman El-Hag (University of Waterloo), Dr. Nasser Qaddoumi (AUS), Dr. Khaled Assaleh (Ajman University), Dr. Khaled Shaban (Qatar University), and Dr. Magdy Salama (University of Waterloo).

Funding: Qatar National Research Foundation and AUS.

2. Outdoor insulator condition monitoring

Outdoor insulators play an important role to ensure the reliable delivery of electric power from the generation station to the customers. It has been reported that most of the failures of overhead lines are due to different failure modes of outdoor insulators. In this research different new techniques are introduced to improve the condition monitoring and diagnostics of outdoor insulators.
