Department head's message

The mission of the department, its faculty and staff is to be the leading mechanical engineering department in the region through excellence in teaching, research, and service to the community.
Mamoun F. Abdel-Hafez

Welcome to the Department of Mechanical Engineering at American University of Sharjah. Our department offers outstanding undergraduate and graduate programs that prepare students for today’s rapidly changing and comparative environment. Our students conduct fundamental and practical research at the forefront of the science and engineering. Our faculty are intellectual leaders in their respective areas of research and our students have opportunities to work one-on-one with these faculty while pursuing their research and developing their skills and knowledge.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is one of the largest departments at AUS. Our curriculum falls under three tracks: Thermofluids, Design and Manufacturing, and Control and Dynamics. The curriculum is supported with a large number of well-equipped laboratories to support the fundamental theory taught in the class room. These laboratories also support the research conducted by students under the supervision of faculty and laboratory instructors. Our students also have the opportunity to minor in emerging fields in engineering such as renewable energy, mechatronics engineering, aerospace engineering, biomedical engineering, and petroleum engineering.

The mission of the department, its faculty and staff is to be the leading mechanical engineering department in the region through excellence in teaching, research, and service to the community. This mission can only be achieved through the dedication of all the stake holders of the department. Most importantly, it can be achieved by the hard work of our ethical, collegial, and well-qualified students. If you are up to that challenge, we invite you to be part of our family.

More information about specific areas of research, members of our faculty, or admission to our undergraduate and graduate programs can be found here.

I believe that the mechanical engineering department at AUS is the best among the other CEN departments. We have the best professors and lab instructors that treat us as if we are their sons. Moreover, the university supports us with a high-tech labs that allows us to relate our mechanical engineering knowledge with real-life situations. I am a proud AUS mechanical engineering student.

I always remember myself complaining about all the projects and work the engineering program at AUS required. It is only when you graduate and start working when you realize that the AUS College of Engineering elevates your mind and sets you apart from the rest of the engineering students. The professors challenge you with their projects just so you can challenge yourself and improve your critical thinking. I have all the appreciation for the professors who helped me become the aspiring person I am today.

Meeting expectations and deadlines in such a professional academic environment is what makes AUS different than other competitive universities. In fact, it prepares students for demanding careers, where time management is already part of their profession.

Thank you, AUS, for all the stress and pressure that you have put us through. Because of that, I have found the transition from student life to work life quite easy. Special thanks to my professors who had a hand in this, and cheers to my colleagues for sharing the AUS journey among ourselves. I'm indebted for the experience.

I've been studying at AUS for three years, where I've encountered a good number of opportunities, both academic and extracurricular. Throughout my journey, I have received tremendous support from the Department of Mechanical Engineering , which always has students’ best interest at heart. Alongside academics, the volunteer work I've had the pleasure of taking up during my time at AUS made me realize that the end result of holding on to such opportunities, even if they are outside my comfort zone, are almost always beneficial, if not life-changing.
